Logan Morris celebrates a strike,by Tebowing. Bowling by Hannah Boers & Mary Beth Briers The bowling team is knocking down more than pins this season. With the boys team undefeated and the girls team with a record of 4-2, it is no doubt that the bowling team has been a success this year. Senior, Billy The swim team has so far been living up to the standards they set last year with their state victories. This year’s boys’ captain, Michael Mezzuri, won states for the 500 last year and placed 6th in the 200 freestyle. Another boys swimmer, Logan Samuelson, placed 7th and 14th in the 200 freestyle. The girls’ captain, Jessica Hurley, placed 7th with a 59 in the 100 fly. The coaches, Mrs. Postma and Mr. Escara, help the boys and girls swim to victory. The Varsity swimming team, as of now, has an undefeated swimming record, making the swim team’s hard work pay off. The girls practice from two Graddy is captain of the boys’ team, and Shelby Samples and Mikayla Nickel are co-captains for the girls’ team. Coach Guttery proudly says “I feel confident we can make it all the way to the state tournament, and perform well.” Boys bowling team members (from left) Logan Morris, Billy Graddy, and Zach Belcher. Boys & Girls Swim Team by Jordana Levitt, Mallory McGovern & Madison Theile to four every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with Friday as a makeup day. The boys have a similar practice schedule throughout the week.Some of the other swimmers, like the 3 state finalists, swim in other organizations (Swim Florida) where they have a rigorous schedule as well, year round! It’s safe to say that the swimmers here at Fort Myers High know what it means to be dedicated to their sport. The team meets Tuesdays and Thursdays. Thanks to all for supporting the swim team throughout a fantastic season. CROSS COUNTRY by Matthew Jernigan & Trevor Jeter Come support the Fort Myers High School Greenwave Band! Mr. Dahlberg has done a profound job of perfecting the marching band’s halftime show. Many hours of practice and hard work have certainly paid off! Songs in the halftime show include America- Amanda Inscore/News-Press The Dance Team capturing the enjoyment of the Friday night football game against Island Coast. by Nathalie Cazares & Alnaya Kendrick Emily Edwards at the FL Runners in Titusville. Emily Edwards, an elite cross country runner, has been training since she was just 11 years old, growing stronger each year. The junior broke the girl’s school record for a 5K with a phenomenal time of 17:43:80 at the FL Runners Meet in Titusville. Not only did she compete against more than 40 other schools, but she also set a personal record for her high school career. “It feels amazing, I didn’t even actually know that was going to happen. Coming today that was my goal. I was second-guessing myself this morning, but kept thinking CONFIDENCE, and it paid off.” With Edwards, strong support, the girls cross country team is looking strong this season. The team was up for a challenge as they raced at the FSU Pre- Season Meet on Oct. 6. The Girls’ Varsity Cross Country Team came in 3rd place at North Port Invitational The Greenwave Marching Band performs their halftime show October 5, 2012. no by Lady Gaga, Maria from the West Side Story, and Santana’s Evil Ways. The Homecoming football game against Island Coast High School was delayed, although the Greenwave Marching Band still trekked out to the field to support our football team, despite the Amanda Inscore/News-Press weather. Way to keep the positive attitude Greenies! Fort Myers Marching Band will attend a FBA marching assessment at Gulf Coast High School. This is a mandatory event for all marching bands in the state. All the hard work by band director, Mr. Dahlberg and the over 100 member marching band will certainly yield rewarding results! OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP By Alexis Walker Marching Band Leadership Camp had to have been the best 5 days of my summer. On the field we learned basic commands and responses and got a chance to learn the different things that other schools did with their bands. We would eventually combine all of the different things and perform a routine with our groups at the end of camp’s Pass & Review ceremony. After, we got a chance to work with some of the former Chiefs’ Drum Majors as well as the current Drum Major. We had a three hour class on conducting techniques, character building activities, and learning what exactly is expected of a LEADER. There were nights where we watched movies, took tours of the campus, attended music recitals and even a bowling night. Every day of the week pretty much consisted of the same things; waking up extra early, walking miles in the hot sun, and loving the burn of your calves walking up 5 flights of stairs. The days at camp would eventually build up to the final moments at Pass & Review. At the ceremony, we showcased what we learned to our family and friends as a group and all received a certificate for completing what could have been the most disciplined and educational days of everyone’s summer. Award time came around and I had the honor of receiving the “Most Outstanding Drum Major” award. Being at camp really gave me an opportunity to learn new things and grow as a Drum Major as well as an individual. Marching Band has really given me some great memories and I couldn’t be any more grateful.
