A BOUT THE A UTHOR<br />

Teresa Scalzo is the former director of the <strong>National</strong> Center for the<br />

Prosecution of Violence Against Women (NCPVAW) at the American<br />

Prosecutors Research Institute (APRI). Ms. Scalzo has traveled across the<br />

country lecturing to prosecutors, law enforcement officers, victim advocates<br />

and other allied professionals on various issues related to violence against<br />

women. She oversaw the creation of the <strong>National</strong> Institute on the Prosecution<br />

of Domestic Violence and the <strong>National</strong> Institute on the Prosecution of <strong>Sexual</strong><br />

Violence. She designed the curricula for Evidence Based Prosecution and <strong>Sexual</strong><br />

<strong>Assault</strong> Trial Advocacy for the <strong>National</strong> Advocacy Center and the <strong>Sexual</strong><br />

<strong>Assault</strong> Prevention and Response Advanced Training for JAG Officers (FY 06-03)<br />

for the Department of Defense Joint Task Force on <strong>Sexual</strong> <strong>Assault</strong> Response<br />

and Prevention. She has also provided technical assistance and trial support<br />

to criminal justice professionals throughout the nation and has served on a<br />

number of national committees dealing with sexual assault and domestic<br />

violence.<br />

Ms. Scalzo served as a law clerk to the Honorable Jack A. Panella of the<br />

Northampton County Court of Common Pleas in Easton, Pennsylvania<br />

from 1993 to 1994. From 1994 until 1997, Ms. Scalzo served as an Assistant<br />

Public Defender in Northampton County and maintained a private law<br />

practice. From 1997 until October 2001, Ms. Scalzo was an Assistant <strong>District</strong><br />

Attorney in Northampton County, Pennsylvania where she held various<br />

positions, including Chief of the <strong>Sexual</strong> <strong>Assault</strong> Unit and Coordinator of<br />

Police Training.As Chief of the <strong>Sexual</strong> <strong>Assault</strong> Unit, she drafted a protocol<br />

for investigating and prosecuting sexual assault cases and trained local police<br />

officers in the protocol and handling of sexual assault matters. Most recently,<br />

she served as the Policy Attorney for the <strong>National</strong> <strong>District</strong> Attorneys<br />

Association in Alexandria,Virginia.<br />

Ms. Scalzo was an adjunct professor at the Fogelsville Campus of Penn State<br />

University where she taught in the paralegal program.Additionally, she was<br />

an adjunct professor at Northampton County Community College in the<br />

Criminal Justice Program.<br />
