Recrystallization: measurement
• How can we measure recrystallization?
• The traditional method is to perform optical
metallography on sectioned samples.
Recrystallized grains appear as approximately
equiaxed grains with uniform color. Unrecrystallized
grains appear as deformed grains with irregular
contrast.
• Measurement is primarily the area fraction of
recrystallized versus unrecrystallized material.
Stereology tells us that this area fraction is
equivalent to the volume fraction of recrystallized
material.
• An easier measurement is hardness which
decreases during the recrystallization process.
