<strong>Americans</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1929 on more than<br />

six acres of land. It became<br />

Woodson Elementary <strong>in</strong> 1953. SM<br />

In 1866, the U.S. Congress<br />

established six <strong>African</strong> American<br />

regiments, which became known<br />

as the Buffalo Soldiers. In au-<br />

<strong>Texas</strong> Historical Commission<br />

<strong>African</strong> <strong>Americans</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Texas</strong><br />

Abilene & Albany<br />

tumn of 1869, the 9th Cavalry of<br />

these regiments engaged <strong>in</strong> combat<br />

with Comanche and Kiowa<br />

braves at this fort. In operation<br />

only from 1851 to 1854, the fort<br />

now lies <strong>in</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>s. The stone<br />

guardhouse, powder magaz<strong>in</strong>e<br />

and commissary still offer a sense<br />

of frontier life as it was over a<br />

century ago. Interpretive signs<br />

guide visitors <strong>in</strong> this privately<br />

owned property. Hours: Daily until<br />

sunset. No Admission.<br />

Albany<br />

Fort Griff<strong>in</strong> State Historical Park<br />

1701 Hwy. 283 N., 915/762-3592<br />

The 10th Cavalry Buffalo<br />

Soldiers spent some of the 1870s<br />

stationed at this fort. This park<br />

conducts historical reenactments<br />

that <strong>in</strong>clude the <strong>African</strong> American<br />

contribution to the <strong>Texas</strong><br />

frontier. Hours: Park, daily 8 a.m.-10<br />

p.m., Office 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission.<br />
