Represent<strong>in</strong>g the most<br />

<strong>in</strong>tact surviv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>African</strong> American<br />

community <strong>in</strong> Nacogdoches,<br />

this collection of wood frame,<br />

two-room shotgun houses dat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from the late 19th century reflects<br />

standard hous<strong>in</strong>g types of<br />

<strong>African</strong> American communities<br />

<strong>in</strong> the South. Until well after<br />

World War I, Zion Hill rema<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

as the pre-em<strong>in</strong>ent<br />

<strong>African</strong> American neighborhood<br />

<strong>in</strong> Nacogdoches, hous<strong>in</strong>g primarily<br />

east of Park Street Cemetery),<br />

established <strong>in</strong> 1879, is the focal<br />

<strong>Texas</strong> Historical Commission<br />

<strong>African</strong> <strong>Americans</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Texas</strong><br />

present build<strong>in</strong>g, constructed <strong>in</strong><br />

1913, is one of the oldest extant<br />

church structures <strong>in</strong> the city and<br />

has undergone virtually no structural<br />
