The Adame Gorbota Cooperative was originally the Kelo Cooperative, which
was established in 1975. Kelo fell into mismanagement and the members had
to take out new bank loans to cover the financial losses. The coop was
reestablished in 2009 as the Adame Gorbota Cooperative and it currently has
1,220 members. About a year after reopening, the cooperative joined the
Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (YCFCU). The members of
each primary cooperative elect their own executive committee, which makes
decisions about investments like new equipment and tree maintenance, and
how to structure payments to the coop members. YCFCU also appoints
professional managers for each primary cooperative to oversee harvest and
processing procedures, but the manager is accountable to the members and
the executive committee.
