<strong>Marcala</strong> is a municipality in Southwestern <strong>Honduras</strong>, near La Paz. The land is<br />
known particularly for its exceptional coffee, which has exceeded its reputation<br />
throughout the national and international coffee market. There are some<br />
registries of coffee producing farms from 1937-38. However, the<br />
modernization and intensification of production did not occur until the early<br />
1970s, which coincides with the arrival of German families to <strong>Marcala</strong>. To this<br />
day, coffee crops have become one of <strong>Marcala</strong>’s most precious patrimonies. To<br />
protect the prestige, the quality, and the namesake of coffee from this region,<br />
in 2005 a DOP (Protected Origin Denomination) was awarded to <strong>Café</strong> de<br />
<strong>Marcala</strong>, which was the first awarded to a Central American country.<br />
