War”) classically refers to those countries where <strong>Muslim</strong> law is not<br />

in force or those nations at war with <strong>Muslim</strong> nations, as contrasted<br />

with <strong>the</strong> Dar al-Islam, or House of Islam. According to Dr. Tariq<br />

Ramadan, a Professor of Contemporary Islamic Studies in <strong>the</strong> Faculty<br />

of Oriental Studies at Oxford University, this division of <strong>the</strong><br />

world into houses does not have any mention in <strong>the</strong> Quran or<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r Primary sources in Islamic jurisprudence. The divisions<br />

were framed by an early Islamic scholar, Ibn Taymiyyah, in response<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Mongol invations of <strong>Muslim</strong> lands during <strong>the</strong> 13th<br />

and 14th centuries. Many contemporary Islamic scholars do not<br />
