This series of lectures intends to present the major research questions, methods and
results of sociolinguistics, the linguistic subdiscipline which focuses on the relation
between language and society. The topics will include regional and social
dialectology, a review of early correlation studies, code-switching and language
contact, critical sociolinguistics, and language planning. Particular attention will be
paid to recent developments in the field of sociolinguistics, such as discussions of
language contact in urban communities, identity construction, or approaches to
language shift and change.
