Program Mission
Education, awareness and protecting the hearing of
young musicians are the foundation of the Adopt-a-Band
program. By providing products at more than half-off
retail prices, Etymotic Research demonstrates a strong
commitment to promoting healthy playing and
listening habits.
The Importance of Hearing Protection
Hearing loss is a function of exposure time, the
average sound level, and the peak level of very loud
sounds. Exposure to excessive noise from drumlines,
pipe bands, marching bands, orchestras, and music from
a player’s own instrument or nearby instruments can cause
permanent hearing loss depending on the intensity and
duration of the sound. Some persons are more susceptible
than others to hearing loss from high-level sound.
The human ear overloads at high sound levels, making it
difficult to impossible to distinguish the blend with other
instruments.
Ringing in the ears and temporary hearing loss can occur
from a single concert, sporting event, or sudden loud
noise like a firecracker. Just as sunburn heals but leaves
permanent skin damage, temporary hearing loss recovers
but there can be irreversible inner ear damage that is not
seen until later in life.

Who can adopt a band?
The Adopt-a-Band program is simple to join and
available to parents, boosters, band directors, music
educators — anyone interested in advocating safe
playing and practicing habits for today’s young musicians.
Is Adopt-A-Band only for high school bands?
No. Supporters can adopt any type of music group, including
a neighborhood rock band. The goal is to protect hearing, so
supplying earplugs and information is not restricted.
Is Adopt-A-Band expensive?
Not at all. You can sponsor 10 musicians for only $60. (Level 1)
If we choose a certain sponsorship level,
do we have to buy the same number of
ETY•Plugs every time?
Once you sponsor a band, you may purchase additional
ETY•Plugs in any quantity at the same discounted price.
Can we re-sell these earplugs?
Are there fundraising opportunities?
ETY•Plugs purchased through this program are intended for
band members; however, Etymotic Research has a fundraising
program with specific guidelines for groups with non-profit
status. Contact the Adopt-a-Band program administrator for
more information.
Can our band be featured on Etymotic’s
website and Facebook page?
Absolutely! Sponsors can send images, stats and band website
links to the Adopt-a-Band program administrator for posting.
