Apuan Alps – ITALY<br />

The peat bog area of Fociomboli, near Mt. Corchia<br />

● “Conservation and enhancing of apuan wetlands”<br />

This is a project, funded by the Ministry of Environment in the framework of the<br />

Wetlands Biodiversity Conservation Project, in a central area of the <strong>Geopark</strong>.<br />

The peat bog area was delimited by wooden bollards and, ad hoc experimental<br />

interventions, were performed in order to contain the natural silting process of<br />

the bog and extend the total area of stagnant water by creating as a small pond.<br />

The project envisaged the redevelopment of the vegetation adjacent to the<br />

marsh habitat by planting silver fir seedlings belonging to the only native Apuan<br />

population.<br />

It also includes brochures in Italian and English, equipped paths and an<br />

application for Apple and Android mobile devices, that is a commented and<br />

illustrated guide to identify 130 plants of the <strong>Geopark</strong>’s wetlands.<br />

● Between Environment and tradition: knowledge, skills and actions<br />

This is a project for teaching and environmental education for students of<br />

different ages. The programme envisages initiatives on the tradition and culture<br />

of the Apuan territory as well as activities promoting the understanding and<br />

knowledge of landscapes and environments in the <strong>Geopark</strong>, for a total of 15<br />

long stays.<br />

This year the project has involved about 900 children, from six to fourteen.<br />
