Gerhard Richter
Landscapes
Dietmar Elger
Gerhard Richter (*1932 in Dresden) has always dealt with the landscape. No other motif has fascinated him as
much or kept him so occupied over the years: black-and-white landscapes based on images from magazines
and amateur photos; views of mountains and parks painted in thick impasto; softly hued, transparent, illusionist
lake scenes. Ever since the subtle Corsica paintings of 1968/69, landscapes have become an established,
distinct group of works within the artist's oeuvre. Richter captures reality in a painterly way, such that landscape
and abstraction manifest not as opposites but as related concepts. Containing outstanding illustrations and
insightful texts, this volume examines Richter's landscapes from the early sixties to the present.
Rising
Young Artists to Keep an Eye on!
Olaf Salie
Like a watchlist RISING presents about 100 young artists who are still at the beginning of their career and whose
extremely interesting positions are not yet seen as secure by the established art market. Young art personalities
in the often difficult but crucial time between college and their first gallery experience, whose work is already
raising hopes. The book is not only an inspiration for collectors, curators and gallery-owners and a stimulation for
a desirable and lively discussion, but also allows an insight into the vital bohemia of the artistic new blood. The
selection of the artists is accompanied by a board of trustees of well-known collectors, galleryowners and
connoisseurs of the international art scene.
The Art of Not Making
The New Artist/Artisan Relationship
Michael Petry
Can an artist claim that an object is a work of art if it has been made for him or her by someone else? If so, who
is the 'author' of such a work? And just what is the difference between a work of art and a work of craft? The Art
of Not Making tackles these questions head on, exploring the concepts of authorship, artistic originality, skill,
craftsmanship and the creative act, and highlighting the vital role that skills from craft andindustrial production
play in creating some of today's most innovative and highly sought-after works of art. Interviews with artists and
craftspersons offer further insights into their creative collaborations, in a book that will appeal to anyone with an
interest in contemporary art, crafts, and the debate around what it means to make art.
