Hedi Slimane
Stern Portfolio no. 62
PHOTOGRAPHY
Known for his original vision, Hedi Slimane brings a simple, spare grace to the worlds of photography and
fashion. Alternating melancholy and hope, Slimane's images are composed with great precision. The classical
lighting and compositions are paired with dark, intriguing narratives. Influenced by many genres, Slimane's vision
is fresh and tinged by a romantic sensibility. As with his work as creative director at Dior Homme, his masterly
photographs are superbly crafted and sublime.
Araki
Love and Death
Bruno Corà & Fuyumi Namioka
Nobuyoshi Araki ranks today as one of the most well-known and celebrated artist photographers in the world
with more than four hundred publications to his name. In addition to the autobiographical series - including
Sentimental Journey / Winter Journey, which documents the relationship between the artist and his wife Yoko
from the day of their marriage till the tragic illness and premature death of Yoko in 1990 - the present volume
documents the urban landscapes, the suggestive images of flowers and food, the poetic series dedicated to
the sky and, of course, the series of female nudes and bondage which are, more than any other of his subjects,
so clearly linked to his renown. Among his latest works, are included in the catalogue the series dedicated to his
beloved cat Chiro and a series of photographs over which the artist intervenes with calligraphy, thus making
them unique. The sometime extremely dense layout of the present publication, with 745 photographs, mirrors
Araki's urgency to capture the continuos transformation of reality, through a continuous photographic
documentation.
Photographic Memory
The Album in the Age of Photography
Verna Posever Curtis
As photography became an increasingly accessible medium in the 20th century, the popularity of the
photographic album exploded, yielding a wonderful range of objects made for varying purposes-to memorialize,
document (officially or unofficially), promote, or educate, and sometimes simply to channel creative energy.
Photographic Memory traces the rise of the album from the turn of the century to the present day, showcasing
some of the most important examples in the history of the medium. From an Alaskan expedition album of
Edward Sheriff Curtis's early work, to Walker Evans's extended suite of images in study for Let Us Now Praise
Famous Men, to a family album by Danny Lyon, this beautifully produced book provides an in-depth look at the
history of photography through the handmade objects of some its most famous practitioners, much of which is
previously unpublished. The book includes albums by photographers and filmmakers such as F. Holland Day,
Jim Goldberg, Dorothea Lange, Duane Michals, Leni Riefenstahl, and W. Eugene Smith alongside lesser-known,
yet significant albums on subjects as varied as African American vaudeville, the 1915 Jerusalem locust plague,
and the folkways of Spain.
