There are no scheduled public transport systems around
the Falkland Islands but there is a choice of different ways
to travel around.
TAXIS
Taxis are readily available around Stanley at an affordable
rate, operating seven days a week. Some will travel further
afield on request. Taxis are not metered so it is important
to confirm the price in advance.
bUS
The Falkland Islands Company (FIC) and Falkland Islands
Tours and Travel (FITT) operate door-to-door bus services
between Stanley and Mount Pleasant Airport to meet
inbound and outbound international flights.
SHUTTLE bUS
On most days when a cruise ship visits Stanley, shuttle
services are operated to the Falkland Islands Museum
and to Gypsy Cove from the Jetty Visitor Centre.
VEHICLE HIRE
A small number of companies offer vehicle hire. Roads
outside Stanley are mainly unsurfaced and subject to a
speed limit of 40mph; lower in some settlements. Hire
vehicles cannot be taken to off-road destinations.
LOCAL FLIgHTS
The Falkland Islands Government Air Service (FIGAS)
operates Britten Norman Islander aircraft to many
destinations across the archipelago. Stanley Airport is ten
minutes drive from the centre of town; visitors are met
at airstrips in other locations by their accommodation
provider. Scenic Flights are available for cruise ship
passengers and Round Robins provide the opportunity
for visitors to experience a FIGAS flight starting and
finishing at Stanley Airport if time is limited.
FERRY SERVICE
A ferry service operated by Workboat Services Limited
runs between New Haven on East Falkland and Port
Howard on West Falkland.
TOURS
Stanley tour guides can take you to destinations in the
town environs including the beautiful white sand beach
of Surf Bay, the Magellanic penguin colony at Gypsy
Cove (summer only) and the surrounding hills. Town
tours are also available giving a greater insight into the
Falkland way of life and heritage.
Day-trips can be arranged from Stanley to a number
of destinations on East Falkland and can be tailored to
suit your interest – history, wildlife or a general interest
tour. A number of places are only accessible by 4WD so
a guide is essential without a privately owned vehicle.
Some farms welcome visitors and offer activities
including wildlife tours, fishing and demonstrations of
life on a traditional Falkland farm.
Similar opportunities exist on West Falkland and some
of the Outer Islands. Tours can be arranged through
accommodation providers and by the staff at the Jetty
Visitor Centre. Accredited tour guides wear the Falkland
Islands Tourist Board “REgISTERED gUIDE” badges.
