There are no scheduled public transport systems around<br />

the <strong>Falkland</strong> <strong>Islands</strong> but there is a choice of different ways<br />

to travel around.<br />

TAXIS<br />

Taxis are readily available around Stanley at an affordable<br />

rate, operat<strong>in</strong>g seven days a week. Some will travel further<br />

afield on request. Taxis are not metered so it is important<br />

to confirm the price <strong>in</strong> advance.<br />

bUS<br />

The <strong>Falkland</strong> <strong>Islands</strong> Company (FIC) and <strong>Falkland</strong> <strong>Islands</strong><br />

Tours and Travel (FITT) operate door-to-door bus services<br />

between Stanley and Mount Pleasant Airport to meet<br />

<strong>in</strong>bound and outbound <strong>in</strong>ternational flights.<br />

SHUTTLE bUS<br />

On most days when a cruise ship visits Stanley, shuttle<br />

services are operated to the <strong>Falkland</strong> <strong>Islands</strong> Museum<br />

and to Gypsy Cove from the Jetty <strong>Visitor</strong> Centre.<br />

VEHICLE HIRE<br />

A small number of companies offer vehicle hire. Roads<br />

outside Stanley are ma<strong>in</strong>ly unsurfaced and subject to a<br />

speed limit of 40mph; lower <strong>in</strong> some settlements. Hire<br />

vehicles cannot be taken to off-road dest<strong>in</strong>ations.<br />

LOCAL FLIgHTS<br />

The <strong>Falkland</strong> <strong>Islands</strong> Government Air Service (FIGAS)<br />

operates Britten Norman Islander aircraft to many<br />

dest<strong>in</strong>ations across the archipelago. Stanley Airport is ten<br />

m<strong>in</strong>utes drive from the centre of town; visitors are met<br />

at airstrips <strong>in</strong> other locations by their accommodation<br />

provider. Scenic Flights are available for cruise ship<br />

passengers and Round Rob<strong>in</strong>s provide the opportunity<br />

for visitors to experience a FIGAS flight start<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g at Stanley Airport if time is limited.<br />

FERRY SERVICE<br />

A ferry service operated by Workboat Services Limited<br />

runs between New Haven on East <strong>Falkland</strong> and Port<br />

Howard on West <strong>Falkland</strong>.<br />

TOURS<br />

Stanley tour <strong>guide</strong>s can take you to dest<strong>in</strong>ations <strong>in</strong> the<br />

town environs <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the beautiful white sand beach<br />

of Surf Bay, the Magellanic pengu<strong>in</strong> colony at Gypsy<br />

Cove (summer only) and the surround<strong>in</strong>g hills. Town<br />

tours are also available giv<strong>in</strong>g a greater <strong>in</strong>sight <strong>in</strong>to the<br />

<strong>Falkland</strong> way of life and heritage.<br />

Day-trips can be arranged from Stanley to a number<br />

of dest<strong>in</strong>ations on East <strong>Falkland</strong> and can be tailored to<br />

suit your <strong>in</strong>terest – history, wildlife or a general <strong>in</strong>terest<br />

tour. A number of places are only accessible by 4WD so<br />

a <strong>guide</strong> is essential without a privately owned vehicle.<br />

Some farms welcome visitors and offer activities<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g wildlife tours, fish<strong>in</strong>g and demonstrations of<br />

life on a traditional <strong>Falkland</strong> farm.<br />

Similar opportunities exist on West <strong>Falkland</strong> and some<br />

of the Outer <strong>Islands</strong>. Tours can be arranged through<br />

accommodation providers and by the staff at the Jetty<br />

<strong>Visitor</strong> Centre. Accredited tour <strong>guide</strong>s wear the <strong>Falkland</strong><br />

<strong>Islands</strong> <strong>Tourist</strong> <strong>Board</strong> “REgISTERED gUIDE” badges.<br />
