COLONISTS’ COTTAgES<br />
15 Colonists’ Cottages<br />
Other cottages orig<strong>in</strong>ally constructed from wood<br />
with corrugated iron roofs by the first settlers <strong>in</strong><br />
Stanley can be seen on Pioneer Row and Drury<br />
Street. The tradition of colourful build<strong>in</strong>gs can be<br />
seen all around Stanley and most houses cont<strong>in</strong>ue<br />
to be made from these materials, the light weight<br />
of which makes them the most practical to import.<br />
16 1982 Liberation Memorial<br />
Designed by a <strong>Falkland</strong> Islander, the memorial<br />
was built as a tribute to the British Forces and<br />
civilians who lost their lives dur<strong>in</strong>g the 1982<br />
<strong>Falkland</strong>s Conflict. Beh<strong>in</strong>d this memorial is the<br />
Secretariat, the ma<strong>in</strong> government adm<strong>in</strong>istration<br />
build<strong>in</strong>g and the blue-roofed hospital.<br />
17 Royal Mar<strong>in</strong>e Monument<br />
Unveiled <strong>in</strong> 2008, this monument marks the 175th<br />
anniversary of British rule <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Islands</strong> and is a<br />
tribute to the long-stand<strong>in</strong>g relationship between<br />
the Royal Mar<strong>in</strong>es and the <strong>Falkland</strong> <strong>Islands</strong>.<br />
Beh<strong>in</strong>d this, overlook<strong>in</strong>g the play<strong>in</strong>g field, is the<br />
<strong>Falkland</strong> <strong>Islands</strong> Community School also hous<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the community library and leisure centre.<br />
