JUbILEE VILLAS<br />
9 Whalebone Arch<br />
Constructed <strong>in</strong> 1933 to commemorate a centenary<br />
of British adm<strong>in</strong>istration <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Islands</strong>, the arch<br />
consists of the jawbones of two blue whales.<br />
10 Victory green<br />
The mizzen mast from the SS Great Brita<strong>in</strong> is situated<br />
on the Green with a plaque describ<strong>in</strong>g its history.<br />
11 Whalebone Display<br />
A display of whale skeletons is unveiled each<br />
year for the summer months by anti-whal<strong>in</strong>g<br />
campaigner, Mike Butcher.<br />
12 St. Mary’s Catholic Church<br />
This is an attractive example of a Victorian kit<br />
build<strong>in</strong>g, constructed <strong>in</strong> 1899 and typical of many<br />
colonial structures of its time. Daily services are<br />
held to which visitors are most welcome.<br />
13 The Tabernacle, United Free Church<br />
Another Victorian kit build<strong>in</strong>g, this church was<br />
built <strong>in</strong> 1892. Services, open to visitors, are held on<br />
Sundays.<br />
14 Cartmell Cottage<br />
One of the orig<strong>in</strong>al colonists’ cottages from 1849,<br />
brought <strong>in</strong> kit form from Brita<strong>in</strong> for the military<br />
pensioners who came to settle <strong>in</strong> the islands. It is<br />
now a recreated period house show<strong>in</strong>g life as it<br />
was <strong>in</strong> the 1850s, 1940s and 1970s.<br />
