JUbILEE VILLAS
9 Whalebone Arch
Constructed in 1933 to commemorate a centenary
of British administration in the Islands, the arch
consists of the jawbones of two blue whales.
10 Victory green
The mizzen mast from the SS Great Britain is situated
on the Green with a plaque describing its history.
11 Whalebone Display
A display of whale skeletons is unveiled each
year for the summer months by anti-whaling
campaigner, Mike Butcher.
12 St. Mary’s Catholic Church
This is an attractive example of a Victorian kit
building, constructed in 1899 and typical of many
colonial structures of its time. Daily services are
held to which visitors are most welcome.
13 The Tabernacle, United Free Church
Another Victorian kit building, this church was
built in 1892. Services, open to visitors, are held on
Sundays.
14 Cartmell Cottage
One of the original colonists’ cottages from 1849,
brought in kit form from Britain for the military
pensioners who came to settle in the islands. It is
now a recreated period house showing life as it
was in the 1850s, 1940s and 1970s.
