About Sitting Bull Ranch
6 Sitting Bull Ranch
Sitting Bull Ranch was part of the early
efforts to bring people and agriculture
to the great west. Homesteading efforts
in the area began in the mid 1800’s. Since then the
lands has successfully been used to graze cattle and
to raise a variety of crops.
Since the 1980’s the ranch has been undergoing
major changes. We no longer are grazing sheep or
cattle, we have reduced the number of acres that we
put into crop production and we have developed
comprehensive conservation programs that enhance
the land and to attract wildlife. Today roughly 2/3
of the ranch lands are put into crop production
while the focus on the other land has been conservation
efforts and habitat improvements.
The crops raised at Sitting Bull Ranch over the
last four decades have varied from winter wheat,
spring wheat, alfalfa hay and barley. One of the
unique advantages of the ranch is its location in
the foothills of the Bull Mountains on a high point
between the Yellowstone River and the Musselshell
River. This geographic feature helps funnel moisture
to the ranch making it ideal for these crops.
Over the past ten years a large effort has
been made to transform Sitting Bull Ranch
into a truly world class operation. This
included a significant conservation effort as
well as comprehensive development of the
accommodations. Our facilities now rival
anything in the state of Montana!
Hosting friends and family couldn’t be easier or
more comfortable. The conveniently located guest
quarters provide a welcoming and enjoyable stay.
The focus of many of the ranch upgrades is to create
an environment of comfort and a retreat from our busy
world. Sitting Bull Ranch hosts a variety of recreational
outlets along side world class accommodations.
There are trophy hunting opportunities, a top notch
Folf course with cement tee boxes, a motocross course,
hiking, shooting range and more. The horseback riding
or A.T.V riding opportunities seem endless.
If a guest prefers the comforts indoors instead of outside
Sitting Bull Ranch offers billiards, ping pong,
foosball and darts. Two theater rooms help guests
unwind to their favorite movies or sporting events.
The main lodge and the rec center feature all these
opportunities for indoor recreation and also have a
few quiet nooks for reading and just relaxing.
Bring your extra change and try your hand at the
poker table or keep in touch with the real world by
accessing the wi-fi service available throughout out
the building.
We’ve thought of every modern convenience at this
private and secluded oasis in the heart of Montana.
A visit to Sitting Bull will surely charge your life batteries
and leave you feeling rested and energized for
when you do finally head back home.
Currently the facilities have never been used commercially
but with room to host upwards of 30 guests
overnight at a time it could easily accommodate outfitting
or corporate retreats in style and comfort.
History
12 Sitting Bull ranch
The historic lands that make up
Sitting Bull Ranch have a rich
history. This is where the great
plains meet the mountains, where the buffalo
used to roam freely through the tall
grass prairies, where several Indian Tribes
made their home because of the abundance
of wildlife.
Cowboys and early settlers added their
chapters to this diverse history as they successfully
grazed both cattle and sheep from
the early 1800’s through the mid-1900’s.
The historic Custer Battle Field is about an
hour’s drive South of here. In June of each
year you can watch a reenactment of one of
the most significant battles in US history
along the banks of the Bighorn River.
Historic Pompey’s Pillar is right about
the halfway point between the ranch and
Billings, also worth your stop to gain a
sense of the area’s rich history. A historic
stage coach route takes you through parts
of the ranch. Lying just off the property
is the stage coach stop, “Newton’s Grove,”
which was part of the earliest postal route
in the rugged west.
In the mid 1970’s the land once again transformed.
It went from being used primarily
as grazing lands to becoming part of the
grain belt. Today the ranch grows winter
wheat, spring wheat, barley and alfalfa.
Now almost forty years later the ranch
has a proven history of growing very
good crops, winter wheat and alfalfa
being the primary crops.
Over the last twenty years the ranch
has once again gone through a transition
phase. Conservation has become
a priority to enhance the lands and
the wildlife. These projects have been
very successful and now the lands offer
many trophy hunting opportunities
with a GREAT variety of different
species.
Conservation Efforts
Conservation efforts to improve wildlife and the habitat
that supports wildlife have been underway for twenty
plus years. The results? World Class Hunting!
Here are some of the conservation efforts and programs
we have been working on for the last couple of decades
here at historic Sitting Bull Ranch:
First and foremost we laid out a plan to develop
“edge effect”. Edge effect is key to developing habitat
for wildlife.
Edge effect is where one type of land transitions into
another type of land. Some examples of this are:
• Croplands to grasslands
• Grasslands to rock formations
• Timber to croplands
• Wetlands to native grasses
Over the years we have developed miles and miles of
“edge effect”, this has been the foundation that many
of our other conservation efforts and programs were
developed in conjunction with. Again the results have
been absolutely amazing.
Orchards
A series of orchards designed to
attract and enhance wildlife. The
plant variety is amazing:
• 50 apple varieties: Radiant, Prairie
Fire, Red Jade and Crabapple
• 10 plum trees
• 200 Jack Pine
• 80 Aspen
• 40 Austrian Pine
• 10 Norway Maples
• 10 Cottonless Cottonwoods
• 10 Green Ash
• 5 Honey Locust
• 20 Baby Aspen
• 20 Mayday Bush
• 20 Dogwood
• 20 Chokecherry
• 20 Potentilla
• 20 Snowberry
• 20 assorted Perennials
• 10 Sumac
• 10 Viburnum
• 10 Wild Rose
• 5 Honeysuckle
Wells
Wells have been developed in conjunction
with the orchards. A series
of low pressure irrigation systems
have been developed to promote
plant growth and support habitat.
One of these wells also offers water
to our shop and R.V. Site, this well
is electric. The other two wildlife
wells are shallow wells and are solar
powered. This is the latest way to
go for ease of operation. They have
had a major impact and have been
a pleasure to work with.
Reservoirs
There is a large series of reservoirs
that have been developed throughout
the ranch. Each was placed in a
critical area to help develop water in
all areas of the ranch.
So between the wildlife wells, reservoirs,
and natural springs there
is abundant water available for
the wildlife.
Sitting Bull Ranch
Food
Sitting Bull Ranch is blessed by a
good soils and the right climate to
promote the growth of wheat; both
spring wheat and winter wheat. Also
alfalfa hay is a great crop for this
region. Together these crops along
with great native grasses provide the
main staples of food for our wildlife.
But we did not stop there; over the
years we have developed and managed
a series of food plots that again
support wildlife and are vital habitat.
These plots are sprinkled throughout
the ranch to enhance available food
and habitat for all of our wildlife.
Here at Sitting Bull Ranch we
truly have funded hundreds
and hundreds of thousand
dollars into many conservation
efforts. The results have been
amazing and rewarding.
Sitting Bull Ranch
Hunting
Sitting Bull Ranch sits in a wildlife rich zone
at the foothills of the Bull Mountains in
Montana. The mixed terrain found at this
transition from mountains to vast tall grass prairies is
ideal for wildlife habitat. Anyone looking for adventure
and spectacular scenery will find it right here at
Sitting Bull.
The ranch hosts a wide variety of animals including
world class big game species, predators, upland birds
and waterfowl. This wonderful mix of habitats makes
Sitting Bull Ranch the perfect hunting getaway. In
addition to the world class hunting at Sitting Bull, there
is the benefits of easy accessibility to all areas of the
ranch. The adventure of a lifetime awaits you at Sitting
Bull Ranch.
Mule Deer
Mule Deer can be found throughout the property hiding
in the coulees and feeding in the alfalfa fields or
wandering the sagebrush covered valleys. More Mule
deer have been hunted than any other species at Sitting
Bull Ranch. We are truly blessed with magnificent
deer hunting.
Pronghorn Antelope
Pronghorn antelope, or as we like to call them, “speed
goats”, are abundant throughout the open areas of the
ranch. Six large herds frequently spend time on the
ranch. Within each of these magnificent herds there
are several trophy buck pronghorns. Arguably the best
hunt at Sitting Bull Ranch and possibly the tastiest
game meat one can enjoy.
Elk
The Bull Mountains near Sitting Bull Ranch are home
to approximately 2,000 head of elk. These elk spill down
into the ranch searching for water and food including
16 Sitting Bull Ranch
alfalfa and wheat growing on the ranch. With the conservation
efforts we have made the already world class
elk hunting has been steadily improving over the past
15 years and now you may spot a “400” class bull elk.
Other Hunting
In addition to the species named above we also
have additional species that can be hunted in season,
including:
