<strong>Build<strong>in</strong>g</strong> a <strong>culture</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>responsibility</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>humanity</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

accountability <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> <strong>schools</strong><br />

A guide for teachers<br />

The medium is the<br />

message<br />

There is no po<strong>in</strong>t to talk<strong>in</strong>g about<br />

responsibilities at school to the<br />

learners <strong>in</strong> my class – they will nod<br />

their heads while they are really<br />

th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g about someth<strong>in</strong>g else!<br />

That’s a good po<strong>in</strong>t, it rem<strong>in</strong>ds<br />

me <strong>of</strong> that most learn<strong>in</strong>g does<br />

not happen by listen<strong>in</strong>g but by<br />

experienc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> do<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

So <strong>in</strong> other words, w to be really good<br />

teachers, we w need to th<strong>in</strong>k about<br />

how we teac teach <strong>and</strong> how that affects<br />

what chil children actually learn .<br />

Learn<strong>in</strong>g about responsibilities, why we have them <strong>and</strong> how they should<br />

be practised is probably important but what is probably more important<br />

is how we experience human rights <strong>and</strong> <strong>responsibility</strong> at school <strong>and</strong> the<br />

opportunities that are given for actually us<strong>in</strong>g them on a daily basis.
