Phase by phase ideas for learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g about<br />

responsibilities at school<br />

When you develop lesson materials for children <strong>in</strong> the Foundation Phase,<br />

remember that <strong>responsibility</strong> will make sense <strong>in</strong> relation to themselves, their<br />

friends <strong>and</strong> their immediate experiences.<br />

Learn<strong>in</strong>g about <strong>and</strong> to be responsible can be <strong>in</strong>tegrated across all Learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Programmes. It is especially easy to see its l<strong>in</strong>ks with the Literacy <strong>and</strong> Life<br />

Skills Learn<strong>in</strong>g Programmes. It may be more difficult <strong>in</strong> Numeracy but not<br />

impossible. In all y<strong>our</strong> classes, remember responsibilities are not just a topic,<br />

they are a practice. Learn<strong>in</strong>g about <strong>responsibility</strong> at school should be aimed<br />

at the ability <strong>of</strong> learners to <strong>in</strong>tegrate it <strong>in</strong>to their behavi<strong>our</strong>.<br />

Some <strong>of</strong> the core values, skills <strong>and</strong> knowledge <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>responsibility</strong>:<br />

Values: respect,<br />

fairness, shar<strong>in</strong>g, empathy,<br />

belong<strong>in</strong>g, co-operation,<br />

appreciation <strong>of</strong> diversity,<br />

humanness, <strong>responsibility</strong>.<br />
