Religion at School<br />
South Africa has many<br />
religious groups.<br />
Religion is practised <strong>in</strong> different<br />
ways <strong>and</strong> has different implications for people’s ple’s<br />
way <strong>of</strong> life. For some this means dress<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />
a particular way, eat<strong>in</strong>g specific th<strong>in</strong>gs, or not<br />
eat<strong>in</strong>g certa<strong>in</strong> th<strong>in</strong>gs, pray<strong>in</strong>g at certa<strong>in</strong> times mes<br />
<strong>in</strong> particular ways <strong>and</strong> so on.<br />
Many people end up <strong>in</strong> conflict about<br />
or because <strong>of</strong> their religion. Is this not a<br />
contradiction?<br />
Should <strong>our</strong> religion not help us to<br />
embrace the values <strong>of</strong> openness,<br />
tolerance <strong>and</strong> dignity?<br />
What about people who are not<br />
religious – where do their values come<br />
from?<br />
Could we say that some values are<br />
universal <strong>and</strong> cut across all ‘beliefs’?<br />
