If a system lifetime of 25 years is assumed (component lifetime is<br />
discussed further <strong>in</strong> Chapter 5), the total output is 350,000kWh.<br />
More detailed analysis would give the output used with<strong>in</strong> the<br />
build<strong>in</strong>g, ie the on site energy sav<strong>in</strong>gs - <strong>in</strong> this case, 75% will be<br />
assumed on the basis of results and predictions from similar build<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
This gives 10,500kWh/y or 262,500kWh over a 25 year period.<br />
Similarly, further analysis would provide the percentage of the total<br />
annual electrical load provided by the PVs - <strong>in</strong> this case, it would be<br />
about 36%.<br />
For a very simple measure of cost, the capital cost of £80,000 is<br />
divided by the number of kWh, 262,500, giv<strong>in</strong>g £0.30/kWh.<br />

It is also possible to do simple straight payback calculations by divid<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
cost of the system by the annual sav<strong>in</strong>gs due to supply<strong>in</strong>g part of the<br />
electricity demand us<strong>in</strong>g PVs. The payback periods, however, are currently<br />
considerably longer than 25 years.
