Invitation
VGB Congress 2010
Invitation to the VGB Congress “Power Plants 2010“ in Essen
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
Essen, the venue of this year’s VGB Congress, and the industrial region “Ruhrgebiet” have always been a synonym for energy
and technical development. Similar to other European industrial centres, the Ruhr area has been the nucleus of the industrial
revolution due to its hard coal deposits. Although hard coal had been mined in the south of the Ruhrgebiet around the river
which finally gave its name to the region since the 13th century, it was only the technical development of the steam engine
that enabled the wide application of coal in pioneering inventions. From mill drives and workshop applications of all kind up to
power plant fuel: coal became the basis of innovation and future capability. In the Ruhrgebiet “energy” also means its people’s
capacity to change through progress. Here the structural change has started as early as in the 1950s with decreasing coal
production turning the Ruhr area into a service and technology region. Today, the region presents itself with the innovative
power of its companies and its research institutions as one of the most important industrial sites in Europe.
This year’s Congress will focus on how we will develop and implement sound and sensitive solutions to cope with the challenges
of future electricity supply. With our Congress motto
“Renewables, Nuclear Power, Coal and Gas – Technologies for a Low-carbon Future”
we underline that it is important to use all sources of energy that are available without any pre-judgement and without considering
individual sources as being incompatible with each other. Consequently we will deal with these issues through an internationally
high-ranking programme focusing on the new structures of electricity generation as well as on chances and challenges.
Our lecturers will emphasize the European dimension of the task VGB is devoted to as the European Technical Association that is
celebrating its 90th anniversary this year.
Europe is setting another priority on this year’s VGB Congress, because Essen and the entire region are the European Capital of
Culture. Under the heading “RUHR.2010”, the Ruhrgebiet started to become a new kind of cultural metropolis right in the centre
of Europe. It has been the first time that the European Council awarded the title to a whole region. 53 cities joined together and
are now co-operating in this ambitious project offering a programme that is characterised by the cultural power and the change
from a mere industrial to an innovative and dynamic area. “We are mining a new energy. It is called culture.” This is one of the
slogans of the Cultural Capital which also refers to our issue.
Therefore, you should take the opportunity to participate in this exiting and interesting mix of urban life and culture when
participating in our “energised” VGB Congress 2010.
We are looking forward to welcoming you at the VGB Congress “Power Plants 2010” and wish you a pleasant and inspiring stay
in this year’s Cultural Capital.
Gala Evening Thursday, September 23, 2010
Doors open: 19:00
Start: 20:00
Zeche Zollverein, Hall 12
90 Years of VGB – Ruhr 2010 – Capital of Culture, Essen – Zeche Zollverein
VGB was founded in 1920. Its 90th anniversary gives us the reason to celebrate a birthday party. The idea
of the founders continues to be valid. The work of VGB is highly appreciated by its members in Germany,
Europe and worldwide.
Essen is one of Europe’s culture capitals of the year 2010, and Zeche Zollverein one of its landmarks, listed
by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage in December 2001.
Up to 1987 it produced the coal which is needed to fire power plants. There is no better place for the
birthday party of VGB.
Be our guest for a journey into the past back to 1920. The
Ensemble Six
Vocal Piano Sextet
will perform a potpourri of piano melodies and and a-capella singing typical for that time.
A festive dinner will lead you through the culinary world of the 1920ies.
Another band
Shaggy Dad
will take us back to modern times by performing the music of the sixties, seventies and eighties:
Beat, rock and pop.
Half-day excursion: Trip on the City Tour Bus to Zeche Zollverein
and red dot design museum
12:00 – 13:00 UNESCO World Heritage Site Zeche Zollverein
The two architects Fritz Schupp and Martin Kremmer were inspired by Bauhaus, and designed the industrial
complex to be consistently harmonised across two axes in accordance with principles of symmetry and geometry,
constructing a unique model facility in the form of Zollverein Shaft XII. The shaft facility was built
in 1932, and in 1986 was the last pit in Essen to be decommissioned. On 14 December 2001, what was once
the largest and most beautiful colliery in Europe was designated a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO,
together with the Zollverein coking plant. The grounds house a series of major institutions, such as the new
Ruhr Museum and the ‘red dot design museum’. In this Capital of Culture year, the coal washing plant of the
Shaft XII facility is the central visitor centre in the region. The trip continues by bus.
13:00 – 14:00 (Short) tour of the ‘red dot design museum’
The ‘red dot design museum’ is unique. It displays the world’s largest and probably most unusual collection of
contemporary designs. Over an area of more than 4,000 m², around 1,000 products from around the world are
presented – all of them distinguished with the ‘red dot’. The names of the designers and companies read like a
Who’s Who of design. And all of this in the breathtaking architecture of the former Zollverein Coal Mine.
Return journey by bus to the Intercity Hotel (central station).
Services: Bus and tour guide provided for the duration of the event, entrance to and guided tour
of Zeche Zollverein and the Red Dot Design Museum.
Full Day Tour II: Folkwang, City Centre and Cathedral Treasury
10:00 Short walk (approx. 20 min.) along the “Culture Path” to the Folkwang
Museum. (In the event of bad weather, travel by underground or tram)
10:30 – 12:00 Visit to the exhibition “Images of a metropolis – The Impressionists in Paris“
in the newly erected buildings of the Folkwang Museum designed by star
architect Chipperfield.
The focus is on the reconstruction of the collection that was founded in 1902 by Karl Ernst Osthaus,
was brought to Essen shortly after his premature death in 1921, and which was here developed into an
institution with global significance by Ernst Gosebruch. The co-founder of the Museum of Modern Art in
New York, Paul J. Sachs, when visiting Essen in 1932, described the Folkwang as “the most beautiful
museum in the world”. The Nazis brutally interrupted the progressive acquisition and display policy of the
museum in 1937, and confiscated more than 1,400 works, which were later legally sold and are now
amongst the masterpieces of great museums and private collections both in Germany and abroad, including
paintings by Kandinsky and Matisse, Kirchner and Marc, Munch and Beckmann.
12:30 – 14:30 Return trip to the city centre / Lunch break in one of the many restaurants
in the city centre.
14:30 – 15:00 Beginning of a city tour through Essen city centre
On the way you can visit Essen Cathedral and the city’s Town Hall, whose 22 storeys offer you a fantastic
view over the Capital of Culture.
15:00 – 16:00 Visit to the Cathedral Treasure Chamber
Now that the damage from aerial bombardment has been repaired, the Münster church shows the same
form today as at the beginning of the 14th century. The 11th century octagonal tower of Abbess Theophanu
survived the war unscathed. The more compact Westphalian version of an early Gothic hall church stands on
the foundations of Essen’s first monastery church, whose corner stone was laid around the year 850 by
Altfrid, Bishop of Hildesheim, at the place where he was born. When the Essen diocese was set up on
1 January 1958, the time-honoured “Münster am Hellweg” church officially became a cathedral, and as
such the bishop’s church. The cathedral and its treasure chamber house numerous world-class works of art,
predominantly dating back to the Ottonian-Salian period (980 to 1060): these include the “Golden Madonna”
and the “Seven-armed Candlestick”.
Services: Bus and tour guide provided for the duration of the event, entrance to and guided tour of the
Full Day Tour III: The Western Ruhr Area – Oberhausen and Duisburg
Meeting point for the tours: Hall 14 (coal washing plant), info counter. Access via the escalator)
09:30 – 11:00 Short tour of Zeche Zollverein
Zeche Zollverein in Essen was the largest and most modern mineral coal mining facility in the world. The
two architects Fritz Schupp and Martin Kremmer were inspired by Bauhaus, and designed the industrial
complex to be consistently harmonised across two axes in accordance with principles of symmetry and
geometry, constructing a unique model facility in the form of Zollverein Shaft XII. Today the coking plant
and Shaft XII together make up a unique industrial landscape of international renown with a lively cultural
centre. At the “most beautiful pit in the Ruhr Area”, you can see what was modern in the 1920s and 1930s,
and understand the development of heavy industry. The cultural landscape of the UNESCO-designated World
Heritage Site Zollverein is not simply maintained as a monument, but is actively developed economically
in a state of continuous change.
11:15 Trip continues to Oberhausen
12:00 – 13:00 Lunch in one of the many restaurants of the CentrO mall in Oberhausen.
13:00 – 14:00 Oberhausen Gasometer (“Out of This World” exhibition)
The Oberhausen Gasometer was completed in 1929, and at 117.5 m tall is the largest Gasometer in Europe.
It has a diameter of 67.7 m and a volume of 347,000 m³. The former disc-type gasholder, now known far
and wide as the “Oberhausen Gasometer in the CentrO”, has developed into the most unusual exhibition hall
in Europe, and is a unique venue.
The trip then continues to Duisburg.
14:30 - 16:00 Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park
When the final shift at the smelting works was finished in 1985, after 80 years of hard toil, decay first set in
as nature reclaimed its space. The resulting derelict industrial premises of over 200 hectares can credit its
present status as a discovery park to committed citizens, who campaigned against its demolition. From 1990
to 1999, between the districts of Meiderich and Hamborn, the landscape park came into being as a project
of the Emscherpark International Building Exhibition.
16:00 – 16:30 Return trip to Intercity Hotel.
Half Day Tour: Villa Hügel, ThyssenKrupp HQ, Margarethenhöhe
10:00 Travel by bus. City tour of Essen South including a
10:30 – 11:00 Stroll through Margarethenhöhe
The Margarethenhöhe residential neighbourhood was founded by Mrs Margarethe Krupp on the occasion
of her daughter Bertha’s marriage to Gustav von Bohlen und Halbach. The first construction stage was
completed between 1910 and 1920, in accordance with the plans of architect Georg Metzendorf. With its
bridges and gateways, narrow streets and dreamy house shapes, the neighbourhood conscientiously mirrored
old German idylls, a perfect example of humanised architecture. It is still considered an exemplary solution
to socio-political tasks in social housing construction.
The trip continues by bus into the city centre. Detour through the former works premises of Krupp. Get out
and look around at the new ThyssenKrupp Headquarters, still under construction.
11:30 – 12:30 Guided tour of Villa Hügel
The Villa Hügel in Essen-Bredeney is the former residence of the Krupp industrial family. Completed in 1873,
the building served fully seven decades as both a residence and a representative building for three generations.
Since 1953, on the initiative of the last owner of the company, Alfried Krupp, major international
artistic and cultural exhibitions have been held here. The Villa Hügel has thus become one of the country‘s
major cultural centres. Outside of exhibition hours, the historical residence rooms, the extensive park and
the historical Krupp exhibition can be visited.
Technical Visits
Friday, September 24, 2010
Visit to the Information Centre at the Lingen power plant site and
the Lingen combined-cycle gas turbine plant of RWE Power AG
At the Lingen site in Emsland, two gas-based power plant units working in combined-cycle mode with a
total electric capacity of 840 megawatts (MW) have been installed since 1974/75. Extending its Lingen
power plant site, RWE Power erected a combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant with a net capacity of
876 MW that was commissioned in April 2010. The plants operate on the cogeneration principle and supply
adjacent industrial operations with process steam. The new plant will be the most modern CCGT station
worldwide. Thanks to its energy efficiency of 59.2 %, it has a substantially lower fuel demand than old
plants, thus contributing to the preservation of resources and to the reduction of carbon emissions.
The Lingen site is also home to the 1,400MW unit of the Emsland nuclear power station. It was commissioned
in 1988 and since then has been producing some eleven billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year.
Visit to the Coal Innovation Centre at the Bergheim-Niederaussem site
of RWE Power AG
In 2003, the Niederaussem power plant site in Bergheim saw the commissioning of the world‘s most modern
lignite-fired power station unit. It goes by the name of „BoA 1“, and RWE Power is bundling its research
projects for lowering and converting CO2 in this plant and its technology, turning Niederaussem into a
„Coal Innovation Centre“. Examples of these projects are an advanced pilot algae plant investigating the
use of CO2 as a valuable raw material and a CO2 scrubbing pilot plant exploring the separation of CO2.
The research project „High-performance scrubber REAplus“ is set to tap opportunities for further emission
reductions and a fluidized-bed drying system with internal waste heat utilization (WTA) is expected to
significantly boost the efficiency of lignite-based power generation. Research and development projects
are an important component in the CO2 climate-protection strategy of RWE Power. Here, the Company is
gaining invaluable insights that can be ported to other projects and plants.
Modern Maintenance Systems in the Luenen Power Plant
Technical Visits
Friday, September 24, 2010
In the year 2009 block 7 (350 MW) of the Luenen power plant was equipped with modern diagnosis
systems. The installed systems serve in particular to recognize at an early stage significant variations of
the monitored components resp. process parameters. These systems procure enough time for the plant
personnel to analyze the situation and to start corresponding measures if necessary.
By means of the “Statistical Process Control” (SR::SPC) the long term behaviour of the Key Performance
Indicators ascertained out of the operating data are monitored. In the frame of the “Stress Wave Analysis”
(SWAN) supersonic sensors are attached to the monitored components. The recorded supersonic signals
indicate very reliably variations of the state of the monitored component.
