river runners to make it one of the club’s most popular programs.”
When: Thursday, March 15, 2012, 6:30 p.m.
What: The pizza is on us - beverages are on you
We are scheduling a 16-hour Swiftwater Rescue course, offered and instructed by Nate Ostis from
Wilderness Rescue International out of McCall Idaho, May 5-6 on the Provo River. Cost will be
$240/person and the WMC will pay half, up to a limited number, and you will be responsible for the
remaining $120. Participants will be required to pay a $50 deposit in advance. Sign up now by sending
me an email and deposit. don_urrizaga@yahoo.com
Nate Ostis’ own words below:
• May 5-6: Provo River ($240/person): Swiftwater Rescue 16 hour curriculum
“Swiftwater Rescue Certification:
All participants in attendance will receive a laminated certification card.
BOATING DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
Don Urrizaga

Our courses are emphasized as Challenge by Choice. Participants always have the option of stepping
out of any activity that feels like it is beyond their comfort zone. There are many different roles
to played in many different skill sessions and scenarios such that some participants may not find
themselves choosing to do in-water elements but rather on-shore support/back-up/rope work/anchor
building/system design/communication/incident commander/etc.”
“Physical Requirements:
Participants should be in good physical condition and have moderate swimming ability. They should be
prepared to endure 2-3 full days of rigorous activity in challenging temperatures. As a simple test, they
should be able to jog a mile in less than 15 minutes, do 20 push-ups in 2 minutes, and 40 crunches in
one minute. These parameters are arbitrary in nature but can give participants a sense of their overall
physical condition. Additionally, I will serve as a coach to all participants to help them identify personal
boundaries and limitations. Risk Management is a culture, not a checklist, and this powerful theme
of prevention will be heavily integrated throughout the course progression. Anyone having concerns
is more than welcome to contact our main office for discussion. Anyone experiencing apprehensions
about taking a swiftwater rescue course should be praised for having fear and respect for a very
dangerous environment. We’re suppose to be nervous and scared before entering into an active
avalanche that is a river.”
“Insurance: Participants need to have adequate health insurance coverage.”
this theme. Hawaiian Leis were handed out to everyone as they arrived to help
If you’re a new member . . . depending on your age and
background . . . you might have a few questions:
1. How do I get involved in activities?
2. What kinds of activities can be organized?
3. What is the average age of WMC members?
4. How many people participate in the activities?
5. How aggressive are the various activity groups?
The answers . . . ask away! Ask someone in the club! Send an
e-mail to wasatchmountainclub@gmail.com or call someone from the
governing board (inside front cover). The average age is...
honestly, we don’t know. Why don’t we know? 1. We haven’t yet
started tracking that information. 2. It doesn’t matter. There are
older folks who can out-hike/-bike/-paddle any younger person.
There are also younger people who like to do light activities.
Sometimes tons of people show up for activities; sometimes only a
couple. This is the nice thing.
The WMC activities allow for flexibility; if you can show up, do--if
you can’t, don’t. As for how vigorous and aggressive the various activities
and groups are (hikers, bikers, etc), contact the director or
coordinator. Please don’t feel like you can’t organize an activity if
you don’t know your way around. There are so many people who
can help you, and you can even decide on a destination at the time of
meeting! You might have one or two awkward activities, but just get
together with people who share the same interests as you, and you’ll
be on your way to tons of fun and excitement--things you
never thought were possible!
Temple blocks were lying all over. There
was also an old water wheel layered with
ferrous iron that was half covered with
earth. small plaques describing each site
were abundant. Benches along the trail,
even a tiered amphitheater donated by
Chevron, were also available. Massive
rock formations lined both sides of the
Canyon walls, leaving much to ones
imagination. We shared the trail with
lizards, bikers, scrub oak, school children
and a few flowers. This was a real history
generating hike with lots of sites to depict
by artists of all kinds.

FAINT TRAILS IN THE WASATCH
62. Goodspeed Trail Revisited
The first episode of this series introduced the Goodspeed Trail,
a route from Central City to the Reed and Benson and Ophir mines high
on the east slopes of the South Fork of Big Cottonwood Canyon, now
known as the Reed and Benson Ridge. That first article described the
trail from the point where it crosses the Big Cottonwood - Little
Cottonwood divide and goes to the mine. The rest of the trail, that which
goes from Central City to the divide, is interesting and deserves some
attention, especially since it will be referenced repeatedly in subsequent
articles. It was first presented to the public in a map published by A. J.
Bancroft & Co. around the end of 1871, where it was shown as a sinuous
path going up the slopes above Central City. One can imagine the
cartographer or his representative standing at Central City and looking
up the slopes while someone, perhaps Henry C. Goodspeed himself,
pointed out the route of the trail. It is unlikely he ever went up onto the
slopes to check routes or locations himself as the entire map is rather
distorted and out of scale. Yet his representation of the Goodspeed Trail
is similar to the actual route that is shown in Figure 2.
It must be remembered that the Goodspeed Trail was built nearly
140 years ago and has suffered many alterations and modifications
during that time. Also, Nature has done Her best to reclaim it, with
remarkable success in some places. With that in mind, the base of the
trail as it exists today can be found on the west side of the telephone
relay building directly north of the Peruvian Lodge in Alta, the
approximate location of Central City. It goes up the slope as shown in
figure 3. This part of the trail can be seen in photographs dating from the
first decade of the twentieth century. One might ask why Goodspeed
picked this location to run his trail up onto the slopes. Probably there
Fig. 2. The Goodspeed Trail from the Central City site to the Reed and
Benson mine. The dashed line is the road to the Emily mine. The solid
line to the lower right is the road to Grizzly Gulch.
Fig. 1. A portion of the A. J. Bancroft & Co.
map showing Goodspeed’s Trail going up the
north slopes above Alta and Central City.
were two reasons: first, this was the location of Central City, which was the center of mining activity at the time.
And second, if one scans the low slopes above today’s highway, which itself is well above the road into Central
City in 1870, it will be obvious that the next
reasonable place to go up would be above today’s
Alta Lodge, which was some distance from Central
City and well east of where Goodspeed wanted to go.
About 400 feet up the trail, where it becomes
less steep, it crosses a mine dump. This is the site of
the Enterprise mine’s discovery shaft, one that dates
back to August of 1870 and was successfully worked
for several years. In later years the lode was worked
at depth through the Howland Tunnel and the shaft
fell into disuse. As a matter of interest, it might be
noted that the Howland Tunnel was on the north side
of the aforementioned telephone relay building. Its
portal was behind the culvert seen in Figure 3 and its
snowshed to the waste dump ran through the culvert.
The roadway that runs over the culvert was the route
of the original horse tramway that ran to Alta from
Wasatch at the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon,
that rail right of way later being used for the highway
to Alta built in the 1930 decade. In the late 1960s or
early 1970s the highway was regraded, making it less
steep as it approached Alta. It now runs below the
culvert as seen in the figure.
From the Enterprise shaft the trail climbs to
a road traversing the slope, a relatively recent road
cut by miner Whitney Hansen around 1959. The trail
turned east to cross a drainage, then leaves the road,

crosses a small flat and turns onto a
northwesterly course up the slope. This next
section has been used by generations of
hikers as a shortcut when following the
Emily mine road coming up from Alta. The
hiker’s trail meanders a bit, but the groove of
the original trail, following a fairly even
course, can be seen on one side or the other.
When it meets the road again it continues in
the same direction, much less used now, but
still obvious from being used to drag ore
boats over the years. In fact this section of
the trail was later known as the Toledo
oreboat trail, used to bring ore down from
the Toledo mine, which will be the subject
of a future Faint Trails article. About a
quarter mile farther up the slope the trail
meets the Emily mine road again at that
Fig. 4. The path of the trail going up from the Emily mine road in
the foreground is clearly visible in this view after a late spring
snow. The point where it leaves the road is about eighty feet above
the apex of the road’s last switchback. It passes under a small
clump of trees on a rocky outcrop, then goes above a larger stand
of trees near the horizon. Beyond that point the trail is easily
followed.
Fig. 3. The Goodspeed Trail starts at the telephone relay building directly north
of the Peruvian Lodge, and climbs the slope as shown by the dashed line. The
present highway to Alta crosses the bottom of the photo.
road’s last switchback before reaching the mine. Here the trail has been completely obliterated by road
construction, but it can be picked up again about eighty feet up the road from the apex of the last switchback. It
takes a little faith and imagination here, but the trail did go up the steep grassy slope in an easterly direction.
Unused trails have a difficult time surviving on open grassy slopes; winter avalanches, shifting soils and erosion
all combine to erase their very existence. But if one looks up the slope there is a small cluster of trees growing
on a mound of rock; the trail went on the right hand (south) side of the mound where it was cut into the rock, a
cut that is still obvious today. The trail then continued farther up to pass above a larger clump of trees. This
elusive portion of the trail was found after a late spring snowstorm when the snow clearly marked its path, as seen
in figure 4.
Beyond the large cluster of trees the trail, more obvious now, can be seen going around the brow of the
ridge where it heads north on the open slope on the other side. Here again it becomes faint, but in the early
months of the hiking season, before the grasses grow too high, the faint line of the trail’s traverse can be seen
heading toward a large white rock about 350 feet away. At that point the trail turns in a westerly direction to go
up to the ridge where it becomes quite obvious again. It crosses to the west side and heads up the slope in a
northerly direction. Here it passes a rather prominent open prospect, surely the Steep Rock claim discovered in
April 1871 by John Burke, et al. From here the trail climbs through a stand of trees that almost obscures its
existence, then continues on a climbing traverse. Just
before reaching the divide, about two-tenths of a mile
from the aforementioned prospect, the trail splits. The
left branch makes a climbing traverse for about 750 feet
to cross the divide west of Flagstaff Mountain. The
traverse is over a lot of open slope with loose soil, so the
trail may not be too clear, but when it approaches the
divide it becomes very obvious again. From there it
continues out along the slopes of the Reed and Benson
ridge to go to the Reed and Benson and Ophir mines as
described in the very first Faint Trails article.
The right branch of the trail goes only a short
distance, perhaps 150 feet, before crossing the divide east
of Flagstaff Mountain and becoming the Days Fork Bowl
Trail, which was described in an earlier Faint Trails
article.
The Goodspeed Trail was known by that name
only briefly. One reference to the name was found in
April 1871, before the appearance of the Bancroft map,
but after that time the Reed and Benson mine had gained
sufficient notoriety that the trail became known as the
Reed and Benson trail. The latter name continued to be
used into the twentieth century and appeared on a number
of Mineral Survey maps.
MICHAEL HANNON'S WMC ANNUAL LONE PEAK
MOUNTAINEERING TRIP
February 4, 2012
participants: Organizer: Michael Hannan; Team Members: Judy Zachary. Cory Karren, Christopher
scott, sam Cannon, Jp spicer-escalante, Jacob Moon, lubos pavel, Matthew van Horn and Mark
Borges.
MiCHael: anticipation was palpable as we met at the Orson smith TH in the draper darkness. Two
prior postponements had heightened the anticipation for this undertaking and clear skies, along with
a smattering of new snow and attention-grabbing 24° temperatures, added to the excitement.
Mother Nature more than made up for her contrary ways the prior two saturdays by gifting us with an
exceptional day. skies remained clear, snow conditions were nearly ideal; light breezes only lifted our
spirits to greater heights since we all knew how savage winter winds can be on the exposed draper
Ridge.
The group trooped out of the trailhead a few minutes after 6:00 a.m., headlamps lighting the way
for the first hour. Boots served us well until the 2 nd rock outcropping; after stowing headlamps we
strapped on snowshoes and would not take them off until the lone peak summit ridge at about
10,900’. Cory was so anxious to get this thing going that he led the group until 20 minutes beyond
Cowboy Camp. There he decided – and we were more than willing – to allow others to share the trail
breaking chores. The beauty of the crystal clear morning was accentuated by the breathtaking view
of lone peak, Box elder peak and Mt. Timpanogos from enniss pass.
Following a short break on the south side of the Big Willow Canyon headwall point – we now label it
the “cache point,” we continued to the beginning of the crux. For those who haven’t been there, the
crux defines the point 100 yards short of and 50 vertical feet below the canted and daunting summit
boulders. Judy volunteered to plant the first set of tracks, tracks leading over a narrow snow saddle,
up and over a vW-sized boulder, over to and under the east side of the infamous “big, bad boulder,”
and then up to the summit. The crux provides unsettling exposure, a factor which each individual
must figure out how to overcome. in all, 7 of us reached the summit. Wide grins, high fives and
shrill whoops underscored the feeling of elation which only a winter summit of lone peak can offer.
We had made it safely and stood in awe of the stunning views in all directions.
The return was a matter of re-tracing steps across the crux and exercising care along the summit
ridge. We were grateful that the humongous cornices which normally grace that summit ridge were
aWOl for this trip. Their absence shrinks the pucker factor way, way down. Following our tracks
down, we made excellent time. Judy, Jp and Michael took an extra few minutes to bag enniss peak
on the return. as long as you are that close . . . why not?
all in all it was a successful trip, one which provided us with fond memories and a sense of
accomplishment, too. We are already looking forward to the lone peak Winter Trip in 2013. On the
lone peak summit is where one can truly say, “Wish you were here!”
Mar 1 Kayak/canoe- The Great Escape – flat water – 13.0 mi
Thu – Meet: Registration required
Mar 4
Organizer: Rick Thompson gone2moab@hotmail.com
Sun
Time for another annual classic- the first of March Canoeing Canyoneering Hot tubbing trip to the Black Canyon,
down by Vegas. A wonderful getaway from winter weekend- spend it hiking, scrambling, canoeing and luxuriating
in scenic hot tubs; leaving your snow boots and parkas home, and hanging out in your Tevas, T shirts and
shorts. We will drive down thursday morning, check into our nice Hacienda Hotel, near Boulder Dam, at off
season rates (last year we paid 29.99 for a room w/ 2 queens), and then drive over and check out the dam, and
the stunning new bridge over the dam. After dinner together at the casino buffet, we will get our gear together
for an early morning rollout to meet the outfitter who will be driving us through the national high security zone
to the foot of the dam, where we will launch our rented canoes and kayaks. There is not much real canoeing
involved, it is all flat water, we will spend the first night camped at the mouth of a canyon less than a mile from
the put in, and then saturday morning meander another mile to a second exploratory canyon, where we will
spend the day, before paddling another mile down to camp saturday night @ the third canyon. With more hot
springs and pools. Sunday morning we will paddle for 3 hours down to the takeout, where the outfitter picks us
up and will bring us back to pick up our cars at the hotel, and then we will boogy for home sunday afternoon.
Actually you’d better not plan on leaving all of your snow gear home- a couple of years ago, after kicking back
in our swim suits all weekend, coming home we ran into a major blizzard around Beaver, and struggled around
vehicles parked on the shoulders and in the barrow pits, before we made it back home. It is still winter. Here.
This trip is full.
Canoeing Black Canyon - Part Deux – flat water – 13.0 mi
Meet: Registration required
Organizer: Zig Sondelski 801-230-3623 zig.sondelski@gmail.com
There has been enough demand in the past that we’ve had a second Black Canyon canoeing-canyoneering-hot
tubbing trip, so let’s try it again. This trip is the following weekend after Rick’s (his is already full). Black Canyon
is south of Las Vegas on the Colorado River below Hoover Dam. As Rick describes the trip “A wonderful getaway
from winter weekend - spend it hiking, scrambling, canoeing and luxuriating in scenic hot tubs, leaving your
snow boots and parkas home and hanging out in your Tevas, T shirts and shorts.” We will drive down Thursday
morning, check into the Hacienda Hotel near Boulder Dam, then check out the dam and the new bridge over
the canyon. After dinner together at the casino buffet, we will get our gear together for an early Friday morning
rollout to meet the outfitter who will be driving us through the national high security zone to the foot of
the dam, where we will launch our rented canoes. On Friday and Saturday we spend most of our time exploring
side canyons and hot springs with short stretches in our canoes between them. On Sunday morning we will
paddle for 3 hours down to the takeout (Willow Beach), where the outfitter picks us up and brings us back to
our cars at the hotel. We will drive home Sunday. Plan on possible temperatures from the 40’s at night to 90’s
in the day. Canoes carry a fair amount of gear so it is almost like car camping. We will be renting a van. I will arrange
the van, room and canoe rentals and shuttles. Trip is limited to 8 people. Sign up soon as NPS permits are
required with your name on them and we have learned that they go fast.
Nordic Ski Tour - Multi Day Tour In Yellowstone National Park – msd – Moderate pace
Meet: Registration required
Organizer: Glen Mackey 540-529-4907 glen.mackey@gmail.com
I am interested in organizing a 4-5 day nordic ski tour to Yellowstone National Park. Trip details are not locked
in, but at this point I mainly want to see if there are some other folks interested in going. There are plenty of
good route options to choose from, both on the packed roads or heading out into the backcountry. Daily mileage
would depend on what sort of surface we were travelling on, but would probably be around 7-15+ miles
per day. This is near the end of the snowcoach/snowmobile touring season up there so traffic on the roads
should be pretty light. If you are interested in going please let me know so we can discuss logistics and route
options.
Cross-country skiing. The Steamboat Springs (CO) Nordic Council sponsors the 8th Annual ‘Glide the Divide’
(aka..North Routt Coureur de Bois)(www.glidethedivide.com). It was named after 17th century French Canadian
traders or “woods runners”. The 45k marathon (27 mi.) and 90k ultramarathon (55 mi.) ski tour/race (classic/
skate) starts near Hahn’s Peak Village, Colorado (a national historic site). The loop courses traverse through the
Routt and Medicine Bow National Forests and are groomed by a diehard crew for the day of the race only. For
strong intermediate to advanced cross-country skiers with knowledge of competitive ski waxing techniques.
This year a 15k shorter loop has been added. The well-stocked aid stations are manned by eccentric locals.
Cowboys/girls hand out provisions (complete with Charlie Daniels Band music) at the Little Red Park aid station
for the 90k/ 45k. The 90k upper loop extends across the Wyoming border and back. Word has it that the
aid stations become even more curious on the 90k loop through Whisky Park. The 90k/45k routes also feature
the ‘Good Times Feed and Espresso Bar’ aid station on Farwell (‘Live Free or Die’) Pass before the long final
descent to Steamboat Lake. Reasonable room rates are available in downtown Steamboat. The old town Pub
OK, you’ve done the 101 beginners north wash trip, and it was great, what’s next? This trip- back to north
Nordic Ski Tour: Kings Peak – msd – 32.0 mi Out & Back – 4500’ ascent – Fast pace
Meet: 5:00 pm at Parleys Way former Kmart lot - 2703 Parleys Way
Organizer: Larry Swanson 801 583-4043 oldswaney@gmail.com
The 39th KPT, hosted by Steve and Larry Swanson, will convene on Friday night (March 30th) at the Henry’s Fork
Snow-Parking area and get under way very early on Saturday morning. We meet for car pooling (optional) at
the K-Mart (now closed) parking area on Parleys Way about 5:00pm and leave NLT 5:30 pm for Evanston and
JB’s restaurant which is just a couple of long blocks from the first exit to Evanston (#3) on the right side as you
approach town. It is next to the Days Inn. Registration is not required. Headlamps are mandatory (double check
that they work and that the batteries are fresh). Lots of water (2-3 liters) and protection from facing directly
into the sun for most of the day is also important. Standard backcountry touring gear is best. Climbing skins
are often handy but not essential. We generally leave the skis at Gunsight Pass and climb the peak on foot so
Vibram-type soles on your boots are usually helpful if the snow is hard. It will be a long day as we start before
dawn and usually end after dark. It’s not at all necessary to summit however to enjoy the ski touring in this
lovely, gentle drainage and normally at least 2/3 turn around short of the peak. Elkhorn crossing is a good scenic
NTD destination used by many. Gunsight Pass, 5 miles farther, is MOD+ and gives wonderful views. Gunsight
Pass is the standard turn around place for most and for ALL that arrive after 2:00pm. The summit is MSD+ chiefly
because of the length of the day and the steep climb of the peak at the end. Mandatory turnaround is 4:00
pm no matter where you are on the route. We carry out ALL waste paper including TP so carry a plastic bag and
plan for it. For additional information call Steve at 801-272-5750 or Larry at 801-583-4043. We will start out no
matter what the weather as the trip to the basin is sheltered and makes a nice ski tour even in stormy weather.
We want everyone to go up and back down on the same route! (the creek route is normal) for safety reasons so
check with Larry or Steve if you plan to leave extra early or ski in the night before for a higher camp.
Road Bike: Rainbow Gardens – mod – Out & Back
Meet: 9:00 am at UTA’s Central Station parking lot, 330 South 600 West, Salt Lake City
Organizer: Elliott Mott 801-969-2846 elliott887@msn.com
This 52 mile ride is to Rainbow Gardens at the mouth of Ogden Canyon for lunch. Our itinerary is to cycle north
and then ride UTA’s FrontRunner train back to Salt Lake. (However, riders desiring a longer ride can forego the
train ride and return along the same course for 97 miles, or return via Harrison Boulevard for a slightly shorter
87 mile trek.) Our route north includes spinning along three bike paths, a teeny tiny climb through Fruit Heights
and stops along the way to regroup. This ride snakes adjacent to the Weber River to its confluence with the Ogden
River along the Weber River Centennial Parkway Trail – and showcases over 10 miles of Ogden City’s nifty
trail system – to include some especially scenic sections. We’ll detour into Ogden for warm-up drinks before
returning on the train if there is interest. Bring lunch money, and for cyclists riding the train, money for the train
ride back. Meet Elliott (801-969-2846) in Salt Lake at UTA’s Central Station, located at 330 South 600 West, at
9:00am.
amazing homes dating back to the 1800’s. This ride is most enjoyable cycled at a casual pace. Riders should plan
on a ride of about 25 miles and a stop for lunch toward the end of the ride. Meet Elliott (801-969-2846) inside
Sugarhouse Park close to the 15th East entrance at 9:00am.
Backpacking Light – ntd+
Meet: Registration required
Organizer: Rick Thompson 801-255-8058 gone2moab@hotmail.com
Coyote Gulch is one of the most beautiful spots in the Escalante area, and done right, with the 15 miles spread
over three days, its a great place to start backpacking, if you haven’t been before. Six miles a day, downhill, is an
easy stroll the first two days, and the final days three miles is only a grind for half a mile, getting up to the vehicles.
On the way back up the Hole in the Rock Rd we will stop for a couple hours run through of two very short
but delightful walk-thru slot canyons, Peekaboo and Spooky. We will drive down thursday and return home on
sunday.
Meet: Registration required
Organizer: Donn Seeley 801-706-0815 donn@xmission.com
Jerry Hatch and Donn Seeley are off to Moab again. Last year, we found a route from Moab to Pritchett Canyon
through the fins in the Behind-the-Rocks WSA. This year, we’ll explore more routes in that area and check
out some other spectacular slickrock canyons. You can expect routefinding and moderate scrambling in some
absolutely amazing red rock landscapes. We’ll drive down to Moab on Thursday evening and return on Sunday
afternoon; we can make arrangements for folks who want to drive down on Friday evening instead.
Road Bike: City Creek Canyon Snowline – ntd – Out & Back
Organizer: Elliott Mott 801-969-2846 elliott887@msn.com
This is a ride to the snowline in scenic City Creek Canyon from Sugarhouse Park. Plan on riding to at least the
filtration plant which is about mid canyon, as snow conditions on the road will determine how much farther we
go before turning around. Cyclists should plan on a ride of at least 20 miles and 900 feet of climbing. If there is
interest, we will stop for brunch/lunch/coffee on the return. Meet Elliott (801-969-2846) inside Sugarhouse Park
close to the 15th East entrance at 9:00am.
Canyoneering In Robbers Roost – mod
Meet: Registration required
Organizer: Rick Thompson gone2moab@hotmail.com
(bring a sharp Leatherman, not a dull cheapo 10$ chinese knockoff), and another good canyon in the area.
Note: the beautiful blue pool from the movie is 260 miles away, at the Homestead Resort, in Midway, so you
don’t need to bring your swim suit. This trip is full.
Jul 4 4th Of July River Party- White Water Rafting – class III
Wed Meet: 8:00 am at Boat Shed - 4340 S 300 W
– Jul 8
Organizer: Rick Thompson gone2moab@hotmail.com
Sun
The clubs annual 4th of July Payette extravaganza will start by driving up to Boise on Wednesday, the 4th of July.
We will proceed directly to set up camp in the very nice Hot Springs forest service group campsite, and then
head over to Crouch to join in on their raucous 4th of July festivities, a wild party that must be experienced to
be believed. Thursday we will do two day runs on the Main Payette. Friday we will paddle a new section of the
river that we have never done before, and Saturday we will run the beautiful high alpine and somewhat more
rambunctious Cabarton section of the North Fork. Then we will drive home on Sunday. Because the 4th falls on
a Wednesday, this years trip involves one extra day, which will give us a chance to do one more day of paddling,
but which then also will entail taking two vacation days, instead of just the normal one. This is one of the most
fun trips of the year, and a perfect intro to white water, with car camping, an insane country hoedown, and a
mellow but active river. These are great ducky venues, get your ducks in a row in advance, to try an adventurous
step beyond the paddle rafts. Whatever your craft of choice, sign up early, as this trip fills up quickly. In an
effort to open this experience to some folks who haven’t been there before, this year I am going to reserve
some spots for Payette newbies. The planning meeting for this trip will be held a week earlier, on Wednesday
June 27th @ 700pm at the boat shed, which is at 4340 South Commerce Dr. (300 west) just up the street from
the McDonalds. A $50 nonrefundable deposit will be required to get your name on the list for this trip.
Jul 20 Backpack - Deep Creek Mountains – msd – 16.0 mi Out & Back – 8000’ ascent – Moderate pace
Fri – Jul Meet: Registration required
22 Sun
Organizer: Gregory Bronder gdbkcb03@comcast.net
Exploratory Car Camp/Backpack - Deep Creek Mountains - While Ibapah peak gets most of the attention in the
range, we will be visiting some of the less visited peaks. We will drive out to Callao on Thursday night and car
camp at the CCC campground. On Friday, we will drive as far as our vehicles can make it up Tom’s Creek Canyon.
We will then backpack up the road to “The Meadows” and set up a base camp. Expect roughly 2-3 miles with
1000-1500’ of elevation change on the backpack. Once at the Meadows base camp, we will set our sights on
tackling Haystack Peak, Ibapah Azimuth, and Rocky Peak for the duration of the weekend. Day 1 will be spent
ascending Ibapah Azimuth (11,987) and Haystack Peak (12,020’). The route will require some bushwacking,
routefinding, and Class 3 scrambling. Expect 5 miles RT with 4000 feet of gain from basecamp. Day 2 will be
an ascent of Rocky Peak (10,748’). Expect some bushwacking, routefinding, and scrambling. Trip stats to Rocky
Peak will be near 7.5 miles RT with approximately 3200’ feet of gain. Once done, we will backpack down the
road to the cars and drive back to SLC as conditions and time dictate. For the drive, reliable 4WD high clearance
will be needed. The area is very remote and rugged. But our efforts will be rewarded with beauty and solitude.
Please contact me by email to register or for questions
Jul 21 Road Bike: Huntington Canyon And Scofield – mod+ – Out & Back – Moderate pace
Sat – Jul Meet: Registration required
22 Sun
Organizer: Robert Turner 801-467-1129 (home); 801-560-3378 (cell) r46turner@gmail.com
We’ll camp Friday and Saturday nights at a National Forest campground in Huntington Canyon. Saturday, we can
ride up and down the canyon with an optional side trip up Crandall Canyon to the mine disaster memorial and
an optional stop at an historic CCC guard station. Another more challenging (but worth it) option is to ride up
the canyon from camp, over the top, down to the upper end of Electric Lake and back. Either way, you’ll see the
scenery at the top of the canyon. It is to die for. Sunday morning we’ll pack up and head for home via the Energy
Loop scenic byway, stopping to ride part of it between Highway 6 and Scofield, with an optional (but must
do - it’s too good to miss) leg up to the charming little mining town of Clear Creek. Contact Robert for more
details and to register.
