The PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Global Forest, Paper and Packaging Industry Survey – 2006<br />

editi<strong>on</strong> provides informati<strong>on</strong> about the 100 largest forest, paper and packaging companies in the world<br />

(ranked by sales revenue). Under the Top 10 companies of this sector four are from European<br />

countries: three Swedish and <strong>on</strong>e Finnish. Table 5 shows the list with the 10 biggest companies within<br />

Europe. Located <strong>on</strong> rank <strong>on</strong>e to four are the Scandinavian companies, which can also be found under<br />

the worldwide Top 10. Additi<strong>on</strong>ally two companies from Great Britain bel<strong>on</strong>g to the ten largest<br />

European forest, paper and packaging companies. Even so Germany is the largest paper and<br />

paperboard producer (by volume) within the EU (see below), the biggest independent German<br />

company is ranked at place 24.<br />

In the year 2005 746,000 people worked in the manufacturing of pulp, paper and paperboard in the<br />

EU-25. This corresp<strong>on</strong>ds to 0.4 % of the employment of all sectors (agriculture, forestry, wood, paper<br />

and others). In absolute numbers of employees the highest part of the people working in this area is<br />

from Germany (140,000), France (93,000) and the United Kingdom (84,000). But the percentage of<br />

the people working in this sector (compared to the employees in all sectors) is higher in Finland<br />

(1.4 %) and Sweden (0.8 %) compared to Germany (0.4 %) or UK (0.3 %) (European Commissi<strong>on</strong><br />

2007b).<br />
