Peace,Love,and Painting
Not since the glass slipper has “identification of shoe” played such a
crucial role in a fairy tale love story.
When Todd Olsen met Lon Michels, Lon was completing an MFA in
painting at the UW Madison. Prior to that, Lon had
PALm
achieved celebrity
SPRINGS
status in the 10 years lived in Key West as a landscape, still life and
portrait painter, and hosting a TV show called “Art and About”. Todd,
meanwhile lived outside Madison WI where he ran the very gay friendly
Prairie Garden B&B close to lake WI for 15 years.
Aptly, the breakthrough in their relationship came after being moved by
a mystical experience that helped ameliorate their fears of commitment
and reaffirm that everything in the universe is mutually dependent and
harmonious.
More details of this and Lon and Todd’s amazing story will be revealed
in Lon’s film, “The Last Supper by Lon Michels”. The film was produced
and directed by Todd. This film may be viewed at the Lon Michels Gallery
Grand Opening Party under the stars at the gallery, with food, music, drinks
and of course-- art!
After joining together and returning to WI they lived at Prairie Garden and
Lon taught Todd how paint with similar techniques, but in his own style,
or German expressionists styles. Now after wintering in Palm Springs for
6 years, Lon and Todd live in the valley full time and spend many hours
painting together and creating beauty for others to enjoy.
Lon’s dream was always to have a gallery of his own where he would be
able to paint in his studio behind the gallery. The gallery itself is intimate
much like the galleries are in NYC or in the 1800’s in Paris in the French
assi salon style. It is also similar to how paintings were hung for years with the
rum Barnes collection “largest impressionist collection in the world”. Lon’s work
im now has developed to where he is referred by many by many in academia
and art world as “The Picasso of Lifetime”.
e. Come to the gallery and see if you agree. Art is hung together with Lon HALF PAGE HORIZONTAL AD
us and Todd sharing space for their paintings, and sculpture. Their first guest 9.625 X 7.98
r- artist also shares the gallery, Alexis Hunter. She has amazing and stunning
llu jewelry with artistry. Her art is just the right accompaniment to Lon and
Todd’s art. Lon and Todd’s art mirrors their effervescent, larger then-life
di
energy. They have overcome countless hurdles to be where they are.
They deeply appreciate the spiritual synergy of art, love and life.
Lon was mentored by Louise Nevelson in NYC, where he was her studio
assistant and in so many ways the new gallery is a tribute to her and their
love for art and each other. Her wish was that she had opened a gallery
with her name and now she has in a sort of magical way through this
incredible couple. Her books are displayed proudly in the gallery.
llata
ent Please come and see the gallery for your self. A portion of any sales
ut for opening month of October will go to these charities: The Blind and
Handicapped Association, Palm Springs Animal Sheltor and the AID’s
sc
Assistance Program. All are very close to these artists hearts, and the
sam patron may decide which charity they choose for the donation.
tem
tio Many new and exciting artists on the schedule to have their own gallery
um room for exhibitions in coming year. One is Lon’s mother, Shirley, who is
prolific with her paintings much like Lon. Other artists in December will be
a
Professors Mr. and Mrs. Kain from Austria, who ran an art department for
ero 25 years at Ripon College and taught Lon in undergraduate in WI. They
m both have become segregate parents to Lon and Todd and an inspiration
for them to keep creating and moving forward to a serendipitous rapture for
all to come and enjoy and feel at the new Lon Michels Gallery!
Both artists have had numerous exhibits in museums around the world
and in homes of collectors.
Juan-Manual Alonso
Journey in the Subconscious
Long silver hair flowing, Juan-Manuel Alonso is a popular runaway
model, known to get the attention of everyone in the audience. At the
height of his modeling career, Juan-Manuel traveled and worked for
fashion houses through out the world. After leaving full time modeling,
he turned to the business world. He worked with fashion and design
houses from Tiffany to WilliWear. The corporate world held little sway
over him and soon Juan-Manuel embarked on his life’s passion, art.
Juan-Manuel came to Palm Springs in 2008 following the transition of
his parents. “I drove from
Miami to Palm Springs
searching for a quiet place
to paint. Once here I found
beauty and artistic freedom
that I had not experienced”,
continued Juan-Manuel.
This Cuban born, New York
educated, world citizen
sees his surroundings,
interprets them through
his subconscious and
translates that passion on to
canvas. Bold colors, surreal,
mystical and symbolic, the
works are commentary on
the physical and the metaphysical
worlds he straddles.
“I want the viewer’s eye to
go on a road trip, guided
by my hand. I want the
viewer to observe my work
as if he or she traveled into
the subconscious space. I
want the viewer to release
and allow their eye to travel
around the canvas. There
is much to be taken in with
my work. It is the journey my
viewer takes with me”, said
Juan –Manuel.
“I pluck ideas for my work
as if they were wild flowers”
said Juan-Manuel. “What
I see is arranged in my
imagination and categorized,
not by monetary value but
the intrinsic value that makes
the object beautiful.” For
him, inspiration comes from
everywhere: the flowers of
North Africa, the Art Deco
architecture of Miami’s South
Beach, the Kasbahs of the
Middle East, the mid-century
lifestyle of Palm Springs. His
passion comes from deep
inside his soul.
These days, with Nynja,
his Xoloitzcuintli, an exotic
Mexican hairless dog, Juan-Manuel lives his life to create his art.
Wherever he may travel it is to Palm Springs that he returns. His work
resides in private and public collection around the world. Locally, Gallery
446, in Palm Springs, represents him. Juan-Manuel’s work “Am Still
Here” was selected for the Palm Springs Art Museum Artist Council
Exhibition. When not painting, Juan-Manual is an art- mentor to local
high school students. He also volunteers with Desert AIDS Project.
What is next for Juan-Manuel? “I will never stop being an Artist. I see
beauty all around. Where my work will go, is only limited by the viewers’
imagination.”
Streetbar welcomes Artwall coordinator and Artist David
Farnsworth’s new paintings on paper in a new show called ‘What
I did on my Summer vacation’, October 9-Nov 5, 2013. This series
of original watercolors were painted during the summer of
2013 . Water, pattern and figurative, these paintings are straight
forward fun and whimsy. The paintings seek that ethereal joy,
in my Heart
After thinking about it for some time, I have decided to hang up
my microphone and no longer host karaoke at Spurline on Thursday
nights. I have had 5 1/2 wonderful years of listening to some
of the greatest voices and...okay, a few of the not so great. But
the best thing about our karaoke has always been that I used the
term “we have no heroes here.” Everyone was welcome to sing
and everyone was applauded for their efforts. First time singers,
some nervous and excited, always walked off the stage with
a smile. They did it! I want to thank the owners of Spurline Jim
and Michael from the bottom of my heart. Who knew that when
you asked me to sub a few times until you found someone permanently,
that all this time would pass? You have always been
fair with me and have praised my work as a host and singer. You
are both the best. What would I have done without my amazing
friend Christopher Durbin, my “partner in crime” behind the
bar on so many Thursday nights? You have a beautiful voice
and soul and I’ll miss our duets. To Jason, Terry, Stephen and
all the other Thursday night guys, you were all the nicest reason
to come to work. I hope all you singers will come see Jeff at
karaoke on Sunday nights. My friend, you are the coolest! I will
be there to croon a tune with you when I can. Finally, to all my
regular and faithful singers, thank you for coming back time after
time, year after year. You are all in my heart...with a song! Love
to all my Spurline family and friends. Terry Darby
P.S. Remember you’ll still see me in my real estate magazine,
Lifestyle Properties every month. November starts my 9th
year of publication!

THE DESERT ROSE PLAYHOUSE TO PRESENT “HOUSE OF THE RISING SON”
The Desert Rose Playhouse, the Valley’s live stage company serving
the LGBT community will present Tom Jacobson’s play House of
the Rising Son. The production will open September 27, 2013 for a
five-week run closing on October 27. Performances are Fridays and
Saturdays at 8:00 PM and Sundays at 2 PM.
House of the Rising Son channels the supernatural imagination of
Anne Rice and the languid style of Tennessee Williams in a mysterious
and decadent romance that evokes the steamy atmosphere of the
French Quarter in New Orleans. It’s a play that Williams himself
might have penned if not for the cultural strictures of his day. The
action centers around parasitologist Dr. Trent Varro who brings his
younger lover Felix back to New Orleans to meet his wealthy relatives,
the courtly but distant Garrett and the apparently homophobic
Bowen. Ghostly sightings, gravestone rubbings, and the unexpected
revelations of an ancient and exceptional family dynasty make House
of the Rising Son ‘a carnival fun “House” of a play – and a ghostly,
entertaining tour’.
House of the Rising Son was first produced by Ensemble Studio
Theatre-LA (Gates McFadden, Artistic Director; Laura Flanagan and
Sarah Malkin, Producing Directors,) from April 23 to June 12, 2011.
The Desert Rose Playhouse is a project of Desert Rose Productions,
Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit public benefit corporation. House of the
Rising Son continues Desert Rose Productions’ mission to produce
and present literate, relevant and entertaining plays and musicals to
LGBT and Gay-Friendly theatre patrons in the Coachella Valley.
I DON’T JUST TALK TO DEAD PEOPLE!
I share tools that enable people to lIve powerfully In thIs spIrItual world whIch
I wIll be sharIng at the MccalluM theatre noveMber 17.
“we are all spIrItual beIngs lIvIng a huMan experIence.”
James van praagh is an internationally renowned new york times best selling author, and has been
recognized as one of the most accurate spiritual mediums working today.
he has appeared on the oprah show, larry King live, dr. phil, a&e biography, nightline, the today
show and many more. he is also a successful television producer with one of the most viewed miniseries
in network history; living with the dead staring ted danson as James in a biography of his life.
he has also produced the dead will tell with eva longoria and ghost whisperer staring Jennifer love
hewitt.
on a recent afternoon at his palm springs home, James shared his thoughts on the desert, his calling,
work and some upcoming plans & publications. asked what bought him to palm springs, “gay gay
gay” he laughed aloud. “My partner and I wanted to go somewhere. we lived in laguna beach and
it used to be the gay capital of southern california and it has really changed a lot. part of the reason
is to be with our tribe a little bit and also we like the desert and always wanted to be out in the desert.”
like so many others, he felt the cleansing energy of the mountains here. “I have been to arizona,
sedona, all over the world but I tell you there is something very special about this area, palm springs,
with these mountains.”
everyday I waKe up when I aM here and say to the unIverse “thanK you very Much
for thIs energy and that I aM here.”
“I don’t think there are any accidents in life. I think everything happens for a reason and for me to be
here, I think there is a reason for it.” feeling that there is definitely a ‘vibe’ here, he said that many
people are drawn to this area for various aspects of healing in their lives whether it be emotional,
physical, mental or spiritual. “a lot of people come here because they are exhausted and they need to
recharge. the energy of the earth can also re-charge you.”
there Is no death- It Is an IllusIon.
James spoke of two of the biggest illusions in our three dimensional world, that of death and
separation. Quantum physics tells us that everything is energy. “you can’t kill energy. the soul
continues. It’s like leaving from one room to another.”
the american poet ralph waldo emerson believed that ‘all creation is one’ and describes the currents
of the universal being being circulated through him- “I am part or particle of god.” after a near death
experience 5 years ago, James experienced first hand what the spirit world had been telling him for 30
years, that we are all connected. “the first thing I realized was oMg- we’re all connected. It was like a
thread that we’re all connected. what I think affects that person and that person. It is a pretty amazing
thing.” he spoke of this thread of connection being like a tapestry, a whole big matrix. after seeing
family members, he immediately shot back into his own body and upon awakening, his first words to
his partner brian were “dying is easy, living is hard.”
everyone goes to theIr own funerals and MeMorIal servIces
raised in an Irish-catholic family and attending funerals since he was a little boy, he has met so many
spirits at services or seen them standing over their caskets. sometimes the comments he hears from
them can be hysterical. “why did you put me in that god da#%* dress. I hated that dress when I was
alive.” other times he has heard the guys say “why did they put all that makeup on me? I look like a
sissy.” or “who’s paying for this?” saying that we never die alone, “we all have loved ones to greet
us.”
when one passes through to the other dimension, he said that we all have what’s called a life review
where your entire life will flash before you in what would seem like seconds. “70 years, 80 years, 90
years in seconds. and they see it, feel it and experience it 10, 20, 30 times stronger than what they did
on earth.”

Though born in Melbourne, Australia, Chris Hemsworth saw
quite a bit of the country in his youth when his family moved
first to the Northern Territory before finally settling on Phillip
Island to the south of Melbourne. He is brother to actors Liam
Hemsworth and Luke Hemsworth.
In 2004, he unsuccessfully auditioned for the role of Robbie
Hunter in the Australian soap opera “Home and Away” (1988)
but was recalled for the role of Kim Hyde which he played until
2007. In 2006, he entered the Australian version of “Dancing
with the Stars” (2004) and his popularity in the soap enabled
him to hang on until show 7 (“Dancing with the Stars: Episode
#5.7” (2006) when he became the fifth contestant to be eliminated.
His first Hollywood appearance was in Star Trek (2009), but it
was his titular role in Thor (2011) which propelled him to prominence
worldwide. He reprised the character in the science
fiction blockbuster The Avengers (2012).
His American representative, the management company
40 Las Vegas is adding an
eye-catching tourist attraction,
in the form of
a huge wheel that can
take more than 1,000
people on a ride 550
feet into the sky over the
city’s famed Strip. The
main construction of the wheel,
called the High Roller, is nearly
finished; it is expected to open
in early 2014.
“The High Roller will be 100 feet
taller than the London Eye, which
opened in 2000, 30 feet taller than
China’s Star of Nanchang, which
opened in 2006, and 9 feet taller than
the Singapore Flyer, which opened in
2008,” The Associated Press reports.
At that size, it would take the High
Roller wheel about 30 minutes to
take its passengers on one full revolution.
The wheel will have 28 cabins,
similar to a capsule in a sky tram or
gondola, with a maximum occupancy
of 40 people. Each cabin will include
300 square feet of glass.
The wheel is being built by Caesars
Entertainment Corp. as the centerpiece
of a huge new development
called The Linq. The company prefers
to call the coming attraction an
observation wheel, rather than a
Ferris wheel.
“It’s going to be an icon,” Project Director
David Codiga tells the AP. “It’s
going to be a part of your visit to Las
Vegas if you ride it or not. It’s more
or less impossible not to see it if you
come here.”
Over the past few months, the
wheel’s ring has taken shape and
spokes have been added to it; an
outer ring was hoisted into position
Monday, NBC reports. Before
it opens next year, builders will add
the cabins and more than 1,000 LED
lights.
Caesars says the development,
which is between the Quad and
Flamingo casinos, is aimed at “the
region’s growing Gen X and Gen Y
clientele — ages 21 to 46 — whose
market share is estimated to grow
to 52 percent of Las Vegas visitor
spending by 2015.”
As local TV channel 8 News Now
reported last year, another big wheel
could give the High Roller some
competition; the builders of that
wheel, called the Skyvue, say it will
stand at 500 feet.
But that project seems to have
stalled, after two massive support
columns were put into place. Earlier
this year, the Vegas Chatter website
declared, “SkyVue Asleep At The
Observation Wheel
