Northshore Performing Arts Center during all four<br />

performances of the Nutcracker Ballet. Our group ushered,<br />

worked the concessions booth, and helped with fundraising.<br />

Many thanks to Rosie and Dan Bodien, Patricia and Sarah<br />

Klein, Brian Bianco, Bob Vernon, Pat Coram, and Marjorie<br />

Bianco for their participation.<br />

Another early Christmas project involved collecting<br />

toiletries (shampoos, soaps, toothbrushes, and toothpaste),<br />

both new and used warm clothing (sweaters, scarves, gloves,<br />

and hats) for the Union Gospel Mission in Everett, WA.<br />

Our first community project of 2013 is a food collection for<br />

Kirkland’s Hopelink Food Bank.<br />

Our deepest sympathy is extended to Herbert Hnilica,<br />

whose wife Mary, passed away after many wonderful years<br />

together.<br />

We send our belated birthday wishes to Victor Bilek, who<br />

recently celebrated his 94 th birthday. Victor currently resides<br />

in Dayton, OH but was an active participant in both the<br />

Tacoma and Aberdeen lodges before they merged with ours.<br />

Rosie Bodien was congratulated for her article on Art<br />

Crystalware, which was highlighted in the Czechoslovakian<br />

Collectors Association Fall <strong>New</strong>sletter publication. This<br />

article included pictures of antique perfume bottles and<br />

provided a historic overview of Josef Schmidt’s glass cutting<br />

and glass production shops in Czechoslovakia during the mid<br />

1800s to the mid 1900s. Kudos to Rosie for her continuous<br />

research of our Czech and Slovak heritage!<br />

Our next meetings are at Claim Jumper Restaurant in<br />

Tukwila, WA on February 23. and at Budapest Bistro in<br />

Lynnwood, WA on March 23.<br />

The December 11 meeting was called to order at 1 p.m.<br />

by President Fran Marlenga at Meyer’s Family Restaurant.<br />

We welcomed guests Carla Zevnik Seufzer, husband Kevin,<br />

and Candace Hewitt.<br />

FRATERNAL FOCUS<br />

Carla, from Global View Capital Advisors, invited<br />

members to watch a webinar on the Fiscal Cliff.<br />

<strong>Members</strong> collected canned goods for the needy. Our<br />

Christmas party followed.<br />

We were happy to welcome Director Brenda Osterman<br />

to our November meeting. Lynn Grande brought several<br />

prospective members. They came to help brainstorm ideas<br />

on how to get the lodge more active, and explore ways to<br />

improve the usage of the building. We would also like input<br />

from members as to the best time to schedule our monthly<br />

meetings to have the best attendance. We are tentatively<br />

looking forward to having a St. Patrick’s fun day at the hall<br />

in March.<br />

We need to say<br />

a special “Thank<br />

you” to Zula Oujiri’s family for sharing the memorial donation<br />

to the WI/Upper MI Scholarship fund. Fran Snippen<br />

presented a check to the Scholarship committee at the State<br />

Convention in Mishicot in October, and shared the story of<br />

how this came to be.<br />

At our December meeting, we reviewed the projects we<br />

have completed and reviewed our contributions to other<br />

charitable organizations. In addition to the donations we are<br />

making to the Toys for Tots program and Celebrations Inc.,<br />

we voted to donate money to Northland College to be used<br />

where it is most needed.<br />

MI state president, was able to give us a box of Boyd Bears<br />

for us to use to enhance our charitable endeavors. As a<br />

start, we donated a pillow of bears to the Ashland <strong>New</strong> Day<br />

Shelter. Fran Snippen brought 35 Fire Safety color books and<br />

wfla pencils to the kindergarten, first, and second graders<br />

at the Our Lady of the Lake Catholic School, as well as a<br />

number of Campbell’s soup labels, milk tops, and Box Tops<br />

for Education, to assist them in getting needed supplies and<br />

accessories for the classrooms. <strong>New</strong> greeting cards were given<br />

to the residents at the Bay Towers Senior Citizen complex<br />

for their use.<br />

For now, our officers will stay the same with Lynn Grande<br />

added as a new three year trustee.<br />
