Oh how times have changed, but one thing remains the same, wfla’s commitment to their members and community. In celebrating 116 years, we wanted to take a look back at events happening at wfla and around the world in 1897. 1897 – 116 years January 23 Was the start of Sherlock Holmes, Adventure of Abbey Grange. February 11 WFLA was organized in Omaha, NE. The first National Officers were: President Josef Zbanek; Secretary Alois Blaha (both from Cedar Rapids), Treasurer Hynek Breuer of New Prague, MN; Joseph Mekota of Cedar Rapids was General Counsel later in 1897, and Dr. Karel H. Breuer of David City, NE was elected Medical Director in 1898. March 11 A meteorite enters the earth’s atmosphere and explodes over New Martinsville, West Virginia. The debris causes damage but no injuries are reported. May 18 Dracula, a novel by Irish author Bram Stoker, is published. June 12 Possibly the most severe quake in history strikes Assam India. Shock waves felt over an area the size of Europe. The mortality rate was low given the size of the quake, 1500 casualties. June 24 WFLA Articles of Incorporation were filed under the laws of the state of Iowa. July 4 Zapadni Ceska Bratrska Jednota (ZCBJ), the Western Bohemian Fraternal Association (WBFA) was born. The first Association Secretary Alois Blaha lived in Cedar Rapids, IA, and most of the business was conducted from his home until 1908. August 31 Thomas Edison patented his movie camera, Kinetograph. November 23 Pencil sharpener patented by J.L. Love. December ZCBJ boasted 49 charter lodges and 1,259 charter members. 2013 Lodge Anniversaries The lodges who are celebrating anniversaries in 2013 are listed below.
