Cutting
Porto–C7945 Navy
Fussy cut four lengthwise strips of 77 ⁄ 8" x 721 ⁄ 2" across the
fabric width, centering each on the white onion-shaped
motif as shown in the finished quilt. Note: It’s important to
have the same design motif at the top of each vertical row.
From Porto–C7946 Blue, cut
• Three 61 ⁄ 2" x WOF (width of fabric) strips. Sub-cut the strips
into eighteen 61 ⁄ 2" squares.
31 ⁄ 2" squares.
From Porto–C7947 Celery, cut
• Fifteen 2" x WOF strips. Stitch the strips together using
diagonal seams to make eight 2" x 721 ⁄ 2" sashing strips.
From Porto-C7947 Grey, cut
• Three 61 ⁄ 2" x WOF strips. Sub-cut the strips into eighteen
Block Construction
Diamond Blocks
1. To make a Diamond Block, place one
Porto–C7946 Blue square on the top left corner
of a 61 ⁄ 2" square of Porto–C7947 Grey, right
sides together. Sew across the diagonal of the
smaller square from the upper right corner to
the lower left corner. (figure 1)
2. Flip open the triangle formed and press.
(figure 2) Trim away the excess triangles of fabric
1/4" from the sewn seam.
3. Referring to figure 3 for the seam direction,
add a Porto–C7946 Blue square to each of the
remaining three corners of the Porto–C7947
Grey square, pressing open and trimming as in
step 2. This will make one Diamond Block.
(figure 4)
4. Repeat Steps 1 through 3 to make eighteen Diamond Blocks.
Onion Blocks
5. Following the manufacturer’s instructions, trace eighteen onion
templates onto the paper side of the fusible web.
6. Press nine templates onto the wrong side of Porto–C7944
Ivory and nine templates onto the back side of Porto–C7948
Navy.
7. Cut out each shape on the drawn lines.
8. Press one onion template onto the center of each 61 ⁄ 2" Porto–
C7946 Blue square to make eighteen onion blocks.
9. Stitch around each fused onion shape with a decorative satin
or buttonhole stitch to complete the eighteen onion blocks.
Quilt Top Assembly
10. Referring to the quilt photo for Diamond block and Onion
block placement, sew six Diamond Blocks and six Onion Blocks
together, alternating them to make one 61 ⁄ 2" x 721 ⁄ 2" vertical pieced
row. Repeat to make three vertical pieced rows.
11. Sew one 2" x 721 ⁄ 2" Porto–C7947 Celery strip to each side of
one 77 ⁄ 8" x 721 ⁄ 2" Porto–C7945 Navy strip to make one vertical
row. Repeat with the remaining 77 ⁄ 8" x 721 ⁄ 2" Porto–C7945 Navy
strips and the 2" x 721 ⁄ 2" Porto–C7947 Celery strips to make four
vertical rows.
12. Sew together the quilt top, alternating the four vertical rows
of C7945 Navy/C7947 Celery with the three vertical pieced
rows.
Finishing
13. Layer the quilt top, batting and backing and quilt as desired.
14. Stitch the binding strips together end to end using diagonal
seams. Fold and press the resulting long strip in half lengthwise
with wrong sides together. Stitch to the quilt front, matching
raw edges and mitering the corners.
15. Fold the binding to the quilt underside and hand-stitch the
folded edge to the quilt back.
