Tonga Berry Crisp & Lemon Poppy
Berry Turnovers and Lemon Bars quilts designed by Osie Lebowitz
TONGA TREATS
Berry Turnovers
Finished quilt: 48" x 56"

These two tasty-sounding quilts are cousins, both
made from 10"-square Tonga Treats cut into triangles.
They have some common roots, but in the end, they
have a completely different look.
Fabric Requirements
Note: References to Berry Turnovers fabrics are in parenthesis.
1 package 10"-square Tonga Treats in Lemon Poppy (Berry
Crisp) colorway—Note: Each package contains forty 10"
squares, two each of twenty fabrics.
12 ⁄3 yards XTonga-B9596 Beluga or 31 ⁄4 yards of any 45"wide
Tonga print for backing. Note: XTongas are 106" wide.
1/2 yard Tonga-B9833 Storm (Tonga-B9845 Java) for binding
57" x 69" (56" x 64") batting
Cutting (for both quilts)
From the 10"-square Tonga Treats:
• Cut each square twice diagonally to create 160 triangles.
Separate the triangles into piles of eight from each fabric.
From Tonga-B9833 Storm (Tonga-B9845 Java):
• Cut six 21 ⁄2" x width-of fabric (WOF) strips for binding.
Block and Quilt Top Construction (Lemon Bars)
1. Refer to the quilt photo to arrange the
triangles in a pleasing color arrangement.
Refer to figure 1 for detail of the block
arrangement to create the finished diamond
shapes.
2. Beginning at the upper left corner, sew
the adjacent triangles together to create a
square. Press seams in one direction.
3. Sew eight blocks per row. Sew the
blocks together to create ten rows.
4. Sew the ten rows together maintaining
the color patterning determined in step 1.
Row and Quilt Top Construction (Berry Turnovers)
1. Refer to the quilt photo to
arrange the triangles in a pleasing
color arrangement. Refer to figure 2
for the correct triangle placement
to create the finished zigzag
patterning.
2. Lay out twelve triangles for
each row, half pointing up and half pointing down as shown
in figure 2. Lay out thirteen rows (there will be extra triangles).
3. Beginning at the upper left corner, sew the adjacent triangles
together to form a row. Press seams in one direction. Repeat
to create thirteen rows.
4. Sew the rows together maintaining the zigzag color positioning.
Trim the extra half triangles at the row ends and recycle
them for another project. (figure 3)
Finishing
5. Layer the quilt top, batting and backing and quilt as desired.
6. Stitch the binding strips together end to end using diagonal
seams. Fold and press the resulting long strip in half lengthwise
with wrong sides together. Stitch to the quilt front, matching
raw edges and mitering the corners.
7. Fold the binding to the quilt underside and hand-stitch the
folded edge to the quilt back.
