Purpose<br />
Homework has different purposes at different grade levels.<br />
For elementary students, it should foster positive attitudes and<br />
good habits. In middle and high school, it should also help students<br />
acquire and deepen knowledge in specific areas of study.<br />
Homework may be assigned for:<br />
Practice — Helps students refine and strengthen skills taught<br />
in class. Includes applications, reading, writing.<br />
Preparation — Makes the next day’s lesson more meaningful<br />
and easier to master. Includes reading and familiarization<br />
with facts and ideas.<br />
Extension — Requires application of higher level, abstract<br />
thinking and problem-solving skills to more complicated<br />
situations. Examples are short essays and reports.<br />
Integration — Requires coordinating and combining several<br />
skills and concepts, and using a variety of resources.<br />
Examples are long-term projects and research papers. ★<br />
HOMEWORK GUIDELINES<br />
Homework requirements increase gradually with each grade level. A balanced homework schedule gives students time<br />
to develop social skills and good citizenship, as well as time to participate in outdoor recreation and creative activities<br />
beyond the school day. General guidelines for frequency and duration follow. Details are in Regulation 500-15.<br />

Grades 1 & 2 – About 15 minutes<br />

assignment ?<br />
Check with your teachers in advance to learn the best way<br />
to get homework assignments in case you are absent or miss<br />
the information during class. Teachers have different homework<br />
policies and procedures: Make sure you know what they<br />
are!<br />
n Call a classmate who is dependable about homework.<br />
n In the event of a long-term absence, communicate with your<br />
teacher via phone, e-mail or notes to keep pace with assignments.<br />
n Some teachers use their classroom voice mail to convey<br />
homework and other information.<br />
n Some teachers post assignments on school Web sites (links<br />
are provided via www.fcps.org). ★<br />

Homework Pointers<br />
For Students<br />
n Accept responsibility for completing your homework.<br />
n Establish a regular routine to work on assignments.<br />
n Be prepared to submit homework on the date it is due.<br />
n For long-term projects, plan ahead and use your time<br />
wisely so you won’t have to rush at the last minute.<br />
n If you are absent from class, be responsible for the homework<br />
assignments you missed.<br />
n Inform your teachers about homework assigned by other<br />
teachers so they can avoid overloading you with work on<br />
any given night.<br />
For Parents<br />
n Provide the space, time and materials for homework.<br />
n Set and maintain a daily homework time.<br />
n Help your child establish a system for recording<br />
assign ments and organizing materials so they are easy to<br />
locate at home and at school.<br />
n Help your child plan an order of study. For example, save<br />
the most enjoyable study until last, take breaks and use a<br />
timer to segment tasks.<br />
n Encourage a “buddy system” to get assignments when<br />
your child is absent from school.<br />
n Talk with your child’s classroom teacher about<br />
homework concerns.<br />
For Teachers and <strong>Schools</strong><br />
n Check homework and provide feedback in a timely<br />
manner.<br />
n Weigh overnight assignments differently than long-term<br />
assignments.<br />
n For incomplete overnight assignments, drop the grade<br />
no more than one letter grade for a marking period.<br />
n Inform students in advance about the criteria and<br />
process by which homework will be evaluated.<br />
n Don’t ask elementary students to check other students’<br />
homework.<br />
n Utilize homework planners, progress notes, phone calls,<br />
letters and newsletters to provide status reports to<br />
students and parents.<br />
n Coordinate scheduling of long-term assignments<br />
within the school throughout the year. ★<br />
