AgriculturAl proficiEncy winnErs continuEd outdoor recreation— entrepreneurship/ Placement Colton barnes—Iowa Colton Barnes is a part of the legendary Barnes PRCA Rodeo, started by his grandfather. He works in breeding stock and manages 300 bucking and 50 saddle horses. Colton also manages 150 bucking bulls and 38 cows. He enjoys the challenges and loves developing new skills. Colton is a member of the South O’Brien FFA Chapter, and his advisor is Eric Kumm. This award is sponsored by Cabela’s and Yamaha Motor Corporation USA. Poultry Production— entrepreneurship/ Placement Jared Taylor schlosnagle—Kentucky Jared Taylor Schlosnagle started his SAE when his parents bought 15 laying hens for him and his sister to raise. Jared started a successful business of producing eggs laid by free-range hens. He has worked to market his eggs, traveling to farmers markets and preparing omelets to show off his product. Jared is a member of the Shelby County FFA Chapter, and his FFA advisor is Kerwin Ewing. This award is sponsored by Tractor Supply Company and Tyson Foods, Inc. Finalists: alan Carlden eck Queen Anne’s County FFA – Md. libby a. bender River Valley FFA – Ohio Carly b. smith Lexington FFA – Okla. sheep Production— entrepreneurship/ Placement nolan robert Hildebrand—California Nolan Robert Hildebrand started his sheep enterprise with one ewe and expanded to 35 wether ewes and two wether sires. He produces market lambs to show and sell to other FFA and 4-H members across the state. Nolan has also had success at fairs and jackpot shows. He is a member of the Templeton FFA Chapter, and his FFA advisors are Chris Hildebrand, Robin Schroeder and Erin Thompson. This award is sponsored by Bimeda Inc. and New Holland. Finalists: brandon rick andresen Benton Community FFA – Iowa alyssa spruill Stephenville FFA – Texas Joshua D. Huber Adams-Friendship FFA – Wis. small Animal Production and care— entrepreneurship/ Placement Tanner ray Miller—Oklahoma Tanner Ray Miller knew he wanted to raise a small breed of dog. He decided on the Pembroke Welsh Corgi because of their low-maintenance, overall demeanor and popularity. Tanner created facilities that allowed him to breed throughout the entire year and also learned veterinary skills to save expenses. He is a member of the Mulhall-Orlando FFA Chapter, and his advisor is Allen Miller. This award is sponsored by Merial. Finalists: Desiree Mari nihart Poway FFA – Calif. Thomas serafin Paola FFA – Kan. Chris Mullins McNairy Central FFA – Tenn. 24 Believe Proceedings 2011 specialty Animal Production— entrepreneurship/ Placement Damon e. pombo—California Damon E. Pombo raises a herd of Boer goats. He has 150 breeding does and three bucks. Originally, Damon sold his goats for purebred breeding stock, market show goats and ethnic niche meat. He expanded his enterprise to also market his goats as weed control. Damon is a member of the Tracy FFA Chapter. His FFA advisors are Nikki Maddux, Pat Rooney, Laura Kellery and Jason Gentry. This award is sponsored by Land O’Lakes Purina Feed and Tractor Supply Company. Finalists: Kacey K. reinholtz Mattabeset FFA – Conn. Donald ethan edge Treutlen FFA – Ga. Jakke K. batten Waupaca FFA – Wis. specialty crop Production— entrepreneurship/ Placement garrett Hightower—Oregon Garrett Hightower works at Strome Fisher Farms and produces seeds. He assists in seed production for sugar beets, hybrid radishes, coriander and cabbage. Garrett also produces several varieties of grass seeds. He has achieved his goal of better understanding what it means to be a producer with both successes and setbacks. Garrett is a member of the Junction City FFA Chapter, and his FFA advisor is Kathy Smith. This award is sponsored by the National FFA Foundation. AgriculturAl proficiEncy winnErs continuEd swine Production— entrepreneurship bridget rae achterberg—Wisconsin Bridget Rae Achterberg started her swine operation purchasing her first 10 pigs from her grandparents. She started breeding show pigs, learning to artificially inseminate the gilts. Bridget also mastered the skills of vaccinating, clipping teeth, dipping navels, castrating and herd health. She is a member of the Abbotsford FFA Chapter. Her FFA advisor is John Slipek. This award is sponsored by La,-Colo. Markal and Tyson Foods, Inc. Finalists: Clayton l. goodnight Clinton Prairie FFA – Ind. barrett powell Ringwood FFA – Okla. Cassidy lynn Key Jourdanton FFA – Texas swine Production— Placement nicholas ryan shealy—Georgia Nicholas Ryan Shealy began his SAE at a 2,400-head swine production facility. He developed proper swine care skills such as moving, breeding and processing the pigs. Nicholas also gained experience in working within a budget and communicating with co-workers. He is a member of the Oglethorpe County FFA Chapter, and his FFA advisors are Rob Jackson and Travis Sertich. This award is sponsored by Kemin and Sunglo Feeds/Akey. Kristen aleesa Knight Shallowater FFA – Texas Turf grass Management— entrepreneurship/ Placement Clayton Daniel Miller—Ohio Clayton Daniel Miller started his SAE mowing his parent’s yard and caring for shrubs and trimming. He now works for a business that cares for more than 500 residential and corporate lawns. Clayton began with the tasks of push mowing and trimming. Now he serves as crew chief and operator of a Dixie Chopper mower. Clayton is a member of the Elida FFA Chapter, and his FFA advisor is Dennis Pohlman. This award is sponsored by John Deere. Marshall spaans McCook Central FFA – S.D. vegetable Production— entrepreneurship/ Placement Mallory McDevitt—Ohio Mallory McDevitt had a neighboring farmer as a mentor and decided to grow her own produce. Using the five acres where she lives, Mallory began her operation with the goal of giving her customers the perfect vegetable. She has developed skills in all aspects of vegetable production. Mallory is a member of the Wapakoneta FFA Chapter, and her FFA advisors are Ron Brown and Chris Turner. This award is sponsored by Tractor Supply Company and Wilbur-Ellis Company. Jarrett andrew beckhusen Cameron Yoe FFA – Texas bryan Mathew Wendt Stoughton FFA – Wis. 25 Believe Proceedings 2011 veterinary Medicine— entrepreneurship/ Placement nicole asheley price—Texas Nicole Asheley Price works at a veterinary clinic. She has taken several veterinary classes at her school. Nicole is knowledgeable in common terminology, anatomy and physiology; hospital procedures and parasitology. Nicole plans on pursuing a career as a veterinarian. She is a member of the Plano East FFA Chapter. Her FFA advisors are John Graf, Karen Kier and Sam Harrison. This award is sponsored by American Veterinary Medical Association. Wildlife Production and Management— entrepreneurship/ Placement Devon a. feldt—Wisconsin Devon A. Feldt has worked with biologists and mentors to develop skills in his SAE. He joined the American Wilderness Leadership School in Wyoming and studied porcupines. Devon learned how to trap, scan and process the animals. He developed skills that helped gain information on their movements, actions and interactions with the environment. Devon is a member of the Waupaca FFA Chapter.
