Recent surveys show that while most<br />

families hardly ever read to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

children when <strong>the</strong>y began <strong>the</strong> program,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y are now reading with <strong>the</strong>ir children<br />

at least three times a week. They are<br />

learning skills that will assist <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

children for a lifetime. As one parent<br />

indicated, “Explaining <strong>the</strong> story, not just<br />

reading it, this helps keep things fun<br />

and moving!” Staff and volunteers have<br />

also noticed that many of <strong>the</strong> children<br />

frequently head for <strong>the</strong> “reading corner,”<br />

stacked with children’s storybooks, when<br />

<strong>the</strong>y enter <strong>the</strong> organized kids’ activities.<br />

We adapted this program after<br />

attending <strong>the</strong> Shared Reading Project:<br />

Keys to Success training for Site<br />

Coordinators offered at Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Essex<br />

Community College by <strong>the</strong> Laurent<br />

Clerc National Deaf Education Center at<br />

<strong>Gallaudet</strong> <strong>University</strong>. Several trained<br />

tutors have joined Shared Reading<br />

Saturdays. Two deaf students, both<br />

members of families whose native<br />

language is Spanish and who while in<br />

high school competed in <strong>Gallaudet</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong>’s Nor<strong>the</strong>ast Regional<br />

Academic Bowl as members of Lawrence<br />

High School’s team, have recently been<br />

recruited.<br />

After several months, <strong>the</strong> number of<br />

participating families remained <strong>the</strong><br />

same, but many more adults<br />

participated in <strong>the</strong> Shared Reading<br />

workshops! Parents and caregivers felt<br />

comfortable enough to invite<br />

grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins,<br />

babysitters. The benefit to all <strong>the</strong><br />

children when so many extended family<br />

members are involved is tremendous.<br />

Hearing siblings sign more and more<br />

each month. As <strong>the</strong>y interact with deaf<br />

and hard of hearing role models, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

communicate more with <strong>the</strong>ir bro<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

and sisters at home.<br />

Many of <strong>the</strong> families have indicated<br />

<strong>the</strong>y really like <strong>the</strong> program and find it<br />

is an excellent way to learn sign<br />

language and increase <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

communication with <strong>the</strong>ir children.<br />

They are unanimous in <strong>the</strong>ir desire for<br />

Shared Reading Saturdays to continue!<br />

The program would not be successful<br />

without <strong>the</strong> collaboration of Nor<strong>the</strong>rn<br />

Essex Community College, <strong>the</strong> Lawrence<br />

Public Schools, and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Gallaudet</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> Regional Center. Many<br />

volunteers also contribute much of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

time to <strong>the</strong> program, including students<br />

from Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Essex Community<br />

College’s Deaf Studies Program,<br />

Lawrence Public Schools staff, and<br />

Starbucks partners. It would also not be<br />

successful without <strong>the</strong> support of <strong>the</strong><br />

Office for Institutional Advancement at<br />

Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Essex Community College.<br />

They have provided tremendous<br />

assistance in obtaining several key grants<br />

for <strong>the</strong> program. Funds have also been<br />

received from <strong>the</strong> Clipper Ship<br />

Foundation, Inc., <strong>the</strong> Starbucks<br />

Foundation, <strong>the</strong> Bank of America<br />

Foundation and Philanthropic Services,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Nathaniel and Elizabeth Stevens<br />

Foundation.<br />

Sharing Trilingually<br />

TO ADAPT YOUR SHARED READING PROJECT FOR A TRILINGUAL SETTING<br />

S U C C E S S F U L LY, CONSIDER INCLUDING THESE KEY ELEMENTS:<br />

• Offer <strong>the</strong> spoken Spanish and English translation simultaneously. Use<br />

headsets for all families. Keep use of all languages equal.<br />

• Welcome additional extended family. Grandparents, aunts, uncles,<br />

cousins, and siblings enrich <strong>the</strong> life of every child.<br />

• Provide extra time and refreshments for socializing. This will allow<br />

families to spend time toge<strong>the</strong>r and exchange ideas, support, and resources<br />

with each o<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

• Discover and nurture great deaf tutors and volunteers. They will become<br />

guides, mentors, and role models for parents and children.<br />
