Resources Galore<br />
Participants in <strong>the</strong> course receive a<br />
wealth of high quality, professionally<br />
designed materials that <strong>the</strong>y can use to<br />
implement <strong>the</strong> Shared Reading Project.<br />
These materials include:<br />
Shared Reading Project Participant<br />
Guide—136 pages of detailed<br />
information on each of <strong>the</strong> 10 modules<br />
used in <strong>the</strong> program<br />
Site Plan Workbook—an 18-page<br />
workbook for site coordinators that<br />
addresses <strong>the</strong> <strong>issue</strong>s <strong>the</strong>y will need to<br />
think through in order to implement<br />
<strong>the</strong> Shared Reading Project<br />
Project Management Toolkit—<br />
contains master copies of <strong>the</strong> various<br />
forms that may be used in setting up <strong>the</strong><br />
Shared Reading Project, including a<br />
budget planning spreadsheet and an<br />
inventory checklist<br />
Training Toolkit—to assist site<br />
coordinators in <strong>the</strong> training of tutors<br />
and families<br />
Participants also receive numerous<br />
videos over <strong>the</strong> course of <strong>the</strong> training.<br />
These include:<br />
• Reading to Deaf Children: Learning from<br />
Deaf Adults (manual and video)<br />
• Read It Again and Again (manual and<br />
video)<br />
• The Shared Reading Project in Action—<br />
demonstrates <strong>the</strong> steps involved in a<br />
tutor-family visit and is designed for use<br />
by <strong>the</strong> site coordinators to train tutors<br />
and orient families<br />
• The Shared Reading Project: In Our Own<br />
Words—a 22-minute presentation of<br />
personal testimonies from parents,<br />
caregivers, tutors, and site coordinators<br />
• The Shared Reading Project—a<br />
promotional video useful for parents and<br />
caregivers, as well as for potential<br />
sponsors of <strong>the</strong> Shared Reading Project<br />
In addition, participants receive a<br />
poster, a bookmark, wallet cards, a tote<br />
bag, and notepads, along with numerous<br />
handouts. By <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> training, <strong>the</strong><br />
site coordinators are inundated!<br />
Motivated and Ready<br />
“I have been so impressed by <strong>the</strong> seamless<br />
delivery of training given by all four<br />
presenters,” said one participant. “It was<br />
obvious to me that ongoing adjustments and<br />
additions were made daily based on careful<br />
collaboration. The needs of <strong>the</strong> group were not<br />
only considered but also acted upon. I will<br />
never forget my positive experience at<br />
<strong>Gallaudet</strong> <strong>University</strong>! Thank you for your<br />
commitment and investment in all of our deaf<br />
and hard of hearing children!”<br />
By <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> week, site<br />
coordinators feel well prepared and<br />
confident that this will work. “I’m<br />
pumped,” said one participant. “I’m<br />
rolling up my sleeves and ready to work<br />
closely with tutors and families,” said<br />
ano<strong>the</strong>r.<br />
Following <strong>the</strong> training, site<br />
coordinators return to <strong>the</strong>ir respective<br />
sites to begin setting up <strong>the</strong> Shared<br />
Reading Project. The collaboration<br />
between <strong>the</strong> new sites and <strong>the</strong> Clerc<br />
Center continues with a blog focused on<br />
<strong>the</strong> Shared Reading Project and regular<br />
phone contact.<br />
