John Pearson Director John Pearson receives 2012 Cuthbertson Award John Pearson, Director of the Bechtel International Center, was honored “for 27 years of unparalleled work on behalf of the international community at Stanford.” The award cited Pearson “for his compassionate and thoughtful support of virtually every corner of the university – working with visiting scholars and new faculty appointees, reaching out to international students and their families, helping undergraduates and graduate students as they consider study or research abroad, and advising on issues of security and risk.” Pearson also was commended “for his careful management of the nomination process and mentoring of students through all stages of such scholarship competitions as the Rhodes, Marshall and Fulbright with extraordinary success: Stanford students have led the nation in the last few years in being selected for many of these prestigious awards.” 13
Outreach Develop a training module for departments focusing on an overview of immigra5on at Stanford Create an OPT tutorial for students to access 24/7 Widen Bechtel’s outreach to stakeholders through advisory board and departmental mee5ngs, web updates, email and facebook Develop standard responses for the most frequently asked email ques5ons from students, scholars and departments Redesign the Annual Report and have it ready for print earlier than has been in the past. Immigration Research best prac5ces on handling LOA cases for less than 5 months. Develop response to an5cipated State Department visits regarding J Exchange Visitors Assessment Analyze staffing needs for next 1-‐3 years to develop a strategic view of trends/goals and needs Improve ongoing assessment of budget expenditures, incomes and needs Assess and improve the room reserva5on policy, including including web informa5on Assess issues with J-‐1 scholar work flow to enhance training of departments Assess possibility of going paperless for immigra5on filing and scholarship applica5ons Assess F-‐1 workshops Assess Interna5onal Zraduate Orienta5on Assess Bechtel’s involvement in summer session Analyze func5ons of host couple and student hosts to assist in strategic planning for future program development. 14 Bechtel International Center Annual Report 2011/12 Bechtel International Center Goals for 2012 - 2013 Technology Focus on phase 2 of the peopleso[ immigra5on portal, including development and tes5ng Improve web informa5on for scholars and departments Develop a database to track the status of J scholar transfer-‐ins and J scholar transfer-‐outs Begin planning update of website to drupal Write user instruc5ons for new workflow procedures (phase 2) and run training sessions.
