Scholarships Mentor Match • • • • Recognition 20 Rhodes-Marshall applicants were matched with a Rhodes-Marshall mentor to work with during the summer 52 Fulbright applicants were matched with Stanford Fulbright Grantee Alumni with regards to their proposed country or field of study 3 Gates Cambridge candidates were matched with Gates mentors 3 Luce Scholar Program candidate finalists were connected with Luce Mentors In April, our new scholars, the successful candidates going to study in UK in 2012 were invited for a luncheon with British Consul General, Priya Guha at the Faculty Club. We held an Overseas Scholarship Winner’s Reception on May 10, 2012 and invited winners and their choice of faculty member and panel members. The names of the scholarship winners are recognized and posted on the bulletin board in the ORC and on the ORC website. Database The database discussion meetings continued in the Fall 2011, Winter and Spring 2012. Danny Crichton, alumni and Fulbright grantee in Korea met with Diane in November and March. Another round of testing of the system was conducted in the March and April. This phase of the database concluded in May 2012. Over the summer, the ORC team worked to develop a template database with Filemaker Pro as another option to track students and scholarship candidates. The project was put on hold until the Winter 2013. Our aim is to begin actively using the database to help track applicants over a span of years and increase efficiency in the scholarship campus process. IDEA Grant We applied for the IDEA Grant - Innovation in Diversity, Engagement and Awareness in January 2011 offered by Student Affairs and Google. We were awarded the grant for our Overseas Scholarship Diversity Outreach project a few months later. The purpose of this project was to engage Student Affairs staff to help the ORC increase awareness and knowledge about international scholarships and funding opportunities among underrepresented undergraduate and graduate students and to encourage qualified students to apply for these awards. The project consists of three components: 1) To create 3-5 short video film clips of 4-7 past overseas scholarship winners who come from diverse backgrounds; 2) To design and facilitate an Overseas Scholarship Diversity Outreach session for the target group of Student Affairs professionals. These 3-5 minute video clips would be screened during the session; 3) To post the interview film clips on the ORC website as a resource for future applicants and for the community. In July 2011, we hired Camira Powell, a Communications major, to coordinate the project. We also purchased a Sony DCR- SX85 handy video camera also to be used for future Bechtel International Center videos. Camira filmed, recorded and edited the brief interviews, and once completed, they were put up on You Tube in August. The project continued in 2011-2012 with the outreach session scheduled for November 29, 2011 and culminated in a presentation at the Student Affairs Poster Assessment Session on May 18, 2012. IDEA Grant Project and Poster Session – presented on May 18, 2012 (see page 38 for poster) Purpose Through the Innovations in Diversity, Engagement and Awareness Grant (IDEA Grant), we provided a creative outreach approach to Stanford Student Affairs professionals to help increase the awareness of overseas scholarships. Our poster outlined the Diversity Outreach Workshop Session and highlighted the short interview film clips of past international scholarship winners who come from diverse backgrounds. Data Gathering We invited a targeted group of Student Affairs professionals to our lunchtime diversity outreach workshop on November 29, 2011. In Summer 2011, we interviewed 6 past international scholarship winners including Rhodes and Marshall Scholars from diverse backgrounds to create video clips for the outreach workshop and ORC website. Key Findings We are seeing more response and referrals from Community Centers and some campus partners. We sent an email to science faculty requesting recommendations for students in the STEM fields. Significance This project will allow the ORC to develop a wider range of outreach activities aimed at encouraging more diversity within the applicant pool. We can now develop evaluative tools to assess this diversity outreach. The National Association of Fellowship Advisors (NAFA) New Advisors Summer Workshop From September 2011 to June 2012, we planned, organized and hosted The National Association of Fellowship Advisors (NAFA) New Advisors Summer Workshop on our campus on July 19 and 20. The planning committee consisted of fellowship advisors from University of California, Berkeley, San Francisco 35
State University and Stanford University. Over 50 fellowship advisors and foundation representatives from around the country convened at the Bechtel International Center for the day and a half workshop. The Marshall Scholars Conference The Bechtel International Center co-hosted the Marshall Scholars Reunion Conference on campus on June 22 and 23, 2012. Several of Stanford’s Marshall Scholar alumni were able to attend this year’s event. ORC Sales The ORC sells passport photos and International Student ID Cards (ISIC) to the Stanford community, as well as to the public. Implement the ORC applicant database to manage and track interested students and alumni. Continue to increase diversity among scholarship applicant pool by working with campus partners.
