6.0 SOIL AND GROUNDWATER SAMPLING
Soil and groundwater samples were collected from four soil borings (SB-1 thru SB-4) on June 13, 2012 in
accordance with URS’ Limited Environmental Investigation Work Plan for the San Jose International
Airport (URS, 2012).
Soil samples were collected using direct-push technology (DPT) operated by Gregg Drilling of Martinez,
California (State of California Drilling Contractor License No. C57-695970). Soil borings SB-01 thru
SB-4 were advanced to 16 feet bgs by driving an approximately 5-foot long, 2-inch diameter sample
barrel equipped with clean plastic liners. Soil samples intended for laboratory analysis were collected by
hand from the soil cores and placed in 4-ounce glass jars with Teflon®-lined lids. The sample containers
were then labeled with Site-specific unique designations and placed on ice in an ice-chest for
transportation to Torrent Laboratory in Milpitas, California, a State of California certified laboratory,
under URS Chain-of-Custody procedures. Soil samples were collected in the vadose zone and analyzed
for total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) TPH as diesel (TPH-d) and TPH as motor oil (TPH-mo) (EPA
Method 8015B-modified), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) (EPA Method 8260B).
Groundwater was encountered in boring SB-4 at approximately 13 feet bgs. Upon completion of the
borings at 16 feet bgs, a temporary, screened PVC groundwater sampling point was installed to facilitate
the collection of the groundwater samples. A bailer was used to collect the groundwater samples from the
borings. The groundwater samples were collected in appropriate, laboratory-provided containers and was
analyzed for TPH-d and TPH-mo (EPA Method 8015B-modified), and VOCs (EPA Method 8260B).
Soil boring logs are presented in Appendix I and laboratory analytical reports are included as
Appendix J.
Soil borings were filled to the surface grade with a mixture of Portland cement and bentonite grout. Soil
cuttings resulting from this investigation were placed in a 55 gallon drum located on site pending profile
acceptance and will be disposed of off-site in accordance with applicable regulations.
6.1 SAMPLE RESULTS
6.1.1 Soil
TPH-d, TPH-mo and VOCs were not detected in any of the four soil samples collected from the soil
borings. As the expected land use of the Site is for runway construction, with excavated soil to be
disposed, additional sampling and analysis is not recommended.
6.1.2 Groundwater
Concentrations of TPH-d, TPH-mo and VOCs were not detected above analytical detection limits with
the exception of toluene, a common laboratory contaminant, detected below the laboratory reporting
limits. Based on these results, no discharge restrictions would likely apply to groundwater in this area
and concentrations do not exceed hazardous waste criteria.
