(Financial Times)
Welcome
I am delighted to welcome you to The Urban Regeneration Summit, a landmark
conference about the massive growth of our cities and the steps that need to
be taken to create sustainable and financially viable living and working environments
through urban renewal.
We are fortunate today to have with us some of the key thinkers and decisionmakers
in this field -- planners, developers, designers, investors, regulators
and city leaders from around the world who have already regenerated underdeveloped
urban areas or are currently conceiving new projects that attempt to
meet social, environmental and financial goals.
Case studies on the successful regeneration of Liverpool and Barcelona will
be used to help identify best practice, while experts will also discuss the
optimal models for community living, the creation of effective public-private
partnerships, the risks and opportunities for financial investors, and the specific
solutions that might be envisaged for China. There will also be an exclusive
presentation on the demographic changes affecting urban development.
It is an honour for the Financial Times to be organising this milestone event in
association with Expo 2010 Shanghai, a World Expo that will be directly focused
on improving urban life.
I would also like to thank our Lead Sponsor, Shui On Land, whose Xintiandi
development has been in the vanguard of regeneration in Shanghai, as well
as our other sponsors – ACLA/Hyder and Grosvenor – for supporting this
significant Summit.
I very much hope you enjoy what promises to be a dynamic and memorable
event, and that you take the opportunity to build relationships that will benefit
you in the future.
Yours sincerely,
David Pilling
Asia Editor, Financial Times
