In addition to hiring highly qualified new employees, Facilities Management helps
current employees develop new skills while better utilizing their many existing
talents. There were 56 internal promotions/transfers during this fiscal year. This is
a decline of 33% from last year which may be attributed to additional opportunities
being created within an employee’s current work group.

Beginning in January 2008, Rebecca Leinen, who also serves as the Apprentice
Program Manager, worked closely with Directors to identify the trades in which
apprentices would be recruited and interviewed from April-June of this year.
Outreach efforts included providing the Charlottesville Housing Authority (CHA)
with an Apprentice Program brochure master which CHA then printed and included
in the April mailing to more than 1000 residents in over 350 public housing
units. Apprentice Program posters and brochures were also distributed to Charlottesville
Parks and Recreation, Work Force Services of the Virginia Employment
Commission, and guidance counselors and principles throughout our area. In addition
to print ads in the local and community newspapers, this year we also advertised
our apprentice program on NBC 29’s Job Spot. Additional outreach was
done by an HR&T representative who hand delivered apprentice posters and brochures
to businesses in minority neighborhoods and spoke informally with owners
and residents.
The seventh annual Apprentice Reunion and Recruitment Luncheon was held at
Alumni Hall on April 23. Increased interest in the University’s Apprentice Pro-
