The Mayflower Society says that Dorothy was the daughter of Henry Ma y of Wisbeech, co. Cambridge, <strong>England</strong>.<br />

TAG 46:117 and NEHGR 50:462-5 bot h call her the daughter of John May, but it seems more likely she is daug<br />

hter of Henry May. See "Plymouth Colony Its History and People 1620-1691 ," Eugene A. Stratton, Salt Lake<br />

City, 1986, pp. 324-326 for a discussio n of this problem.<br />

"English Homes of the Pilgrims", a Mayflower Society map, shows Doro thy May Bradford coming from<br />

Wisbeach, east-central <strong>England</strong>, near the Nor th Sea. Wisbeach is south-east of Austerfield, where William<br />

Bradford ca me from.<br />

Dorothy drowned while the Mayflower lay at anchor shortly after thei r arrival at Cape Cod.[mjr6387.FTW]<br />

After the death of her first husband, Edward Southworth, Alice saile d to Plymouth on the Anne in 1623, and<br />

shortly after arrival married Gov . William Bradford as his second wife. Her two sons by her first marriage ,<br />

Constant and Thomas Southworth, came to Plymouth after her.<br />

Captain Emmanuel Altham of the Little James reached Plymouth in th e summer of 1623, ten days after the<br />

Anne. Together the two ships brough t some sixty persons to the colony. Altham describes the wedding feast c<br />

elebrating Governor Bradford's marriage to Alice (Carpenter) Southworth , just arrived aboard the Anne. He<br />

writes: "Upon the occasion of the Gov ernor's marriage [August 14, 1623], Massasoit was sent for to the wedding<br />

, where came with him his wife, the queen, although he hath five wives . With him came four other kings and<br />

about six score men with their bow s and arrows -- where, when they came to our town, we saluted them with t he<br />

shooting off of many muskets. And so all the bows and arrows was brou ght into the Governor's house, and he<br />

[Massasoit] brought the Governor th ree or four deer and a turkey. And so we had a very good pastime in seei ng<br />

them dance, which is in such manner, with such noise that you would wo nder.... And now to say somewhat of the<br />

great cheer we had at the Govenor 's marriage. We had about twelve pasty [meat pie] venisons, besides othe rs,<br />

pieces of roasted venison and other such good cheer in such quantit y that I could wish you some of our share.<br />

For here we have the best gra pes that ever you saw - and the biggest, and divers sorts of plums and nu ts."<br />

The will of "Allis Bradford Sr. of Plymouth widow" was dated 29 Dece mber 1669 and exhibited 7 June 1670.<br />

She asks to be "Intered as neare un to my Deceased husband, Mr. William Bradford as Conveniently may be" an<br />

d makes bequests to her sister Mary Carpenter; son Constant Southworth; s on Joseph Bradford; son Capt.<br />

William Bradford; honored friend Mr. Thoma s Prence; grandchild Elizabeth Howland, daughter of son Thomas<br />

Southwort h deceased for the benefit of her son James Howland; servant maid Mary Sm ith. Alice Bradford left<br />

an extensive estate, including books.[mjr6387.FTW]<br />

IMM: Widow Alice, came in the "William and Mary," to Plymouth, MA., 1623. Husband Edward Sou thworth<br />

of Leyden was b. 1590; d. ca. 1621. Edward's wife was a widow in July 1623. He m. L eyden, Holland, 28 May<br />

1613, Alice Carpenter, b. ca. 1590; d. Plymouth, MA., 26 Mar 1670, ag e abt 80 years., dau. of Alexander<br />

Carpenter of Wrington, Somersetshire. She came to Plymout h, 1623; m. (2) Plymouth, 14 Aug 1623, Gov.<br />

William BRADFORD. The sons, Constant and Thomas , were brought up in the home of Gov. Bradford.[daverichardson.FTW]<br />
