Ludolf Nielsen (1876-1939)
Symphony No.3 in C major, Op.22 – Hjortholm. Tone picture, Op.53
Bamberger Symphoniker / Frank Cramer
Playing Time: 67:20
Ludolf Nielsen’s (1876-1939) third and last symphony is one of the greatest Danish works in the Late Romantic style, where Ludolf Nielsen concentrates the essence of his
Romantic view of life on the basis of the motto of the work: "I see the world with flowers, / Know joy requires a stormy night." The tone picture Hjortholm is ten years younger,
and is an example of his tonal idiom from the inter-war years. Both works are first recordings, and show Ludolf Nielsen as a master of orchestral writing.
"Denmark's King Frederik IX (1899-1971) was an accomplished amateur musician and self-taught conductor who frequently led the
Royal Danish Orchestra or the Danish National Radio Symphony in private rehearsals and concerts. Some of the King's performances were
recorded, and the ones selected for this two-disc set appear for the first time. The results...need no apology. The Danish musicians...
clearly go the extra mile for their monarch, playing their hearts out...very good and well-balanced mono engineering."
Nice Work • The Danish Radio Jazz Orchestra & Jim McNeely
Pete’s Feet - …and Rhythm – Moksha – Rough Night – Syretha’s Gift – Reflection – Nice Work if You Can Get it
Playing Time: 69:17
Danish Radio Jazz Orchestra chief conductor, pianist and composer Jim McNeely combines tradition and intrepidity. He draws from inspiration of former masters but,
mainly, his writing is personal and easily recognizable – including drama, rhythmical tension and poetry. McNeely encompasses the masculine swing of Thad Jones and
the ’European’ and expressionistic touch that Bob Brookmeyer added to jazz writing. Thus he ensures that the big jazz orchestras will survive in a time when the
expression of improvised music is ever changing and searching.
Marilyn Mazur / Vocal Group Ars Nova / Copenhagen Art Ensemble • Playing Time: 61:13
Marilyn Mazur likes when music is telepathic, surprising, emotional, warm and alive, to reach from the softest lyrical touch and mysterious grooves to powerful wild energy.
This new recording finds Mazur at her multi-talented best, combining her skills of composing, conducting and percussion to produce, eclectic yet accessible music artfully performed
by these skilled musicians.
