O sommo Re dell’Etere,
Propizio i voti ascolta
Che ardenti cuori inviano
HYMNE
Von dem Strahl, der ganz rein
deine Größe umhüllt,
oh höchster Gott des Himmels,
höre wohlgesonnen die Gelübde,
die glühende Herzen entsenden
zu Füßen deines erhabenen Thrones.
Das unbegreifliche Glück,
dessen sich zu erinnern einem teuer ist,
brachte alle Menschen dazu,
dir Altäre zu errichten:
Stets geehrt, soll auf ihnen für dich
heiliger Weihrauch brennen.
Aber wenn unter uns Frevel
jemand übt und deine Verehrung gefährdet,
soll sofort von Usa
Unheil ihn erschrecken;
fürchterlicher, unaussprechlicher Schrecken
soll ihm die Brust zuschnüren.
Introduction: Chorus
HYMN
From the light that in purity
surrounds your greatness,
O highest King of Heaven,
deign to hear the prayers
that ardent hearts send up
at the foot of thy great throne.
The benefits beyond understanding,
dear to remembrance,
have brought all men
But if among us any attempt
fearful, unspeakable
[3] Recitativo
Giojada
Coll’armi, e l’arte in mano
A questo tempio intorno
Voi severi vegliate.
Quando cominci il sacro rito, a queste
Mura d’avvicinarsi a ogn’ uom si vieti;
Udiste?
A tutto si provveda
Con sollecita cura;
Che, se a me stesso credo,
Prospero alfin, io questo dì prevedo.
Scena III
[4] Cavatina
Sebia
Ombre amate, - che errate - qui intorno,
Sanguinose chiedendo vendetta,
[5] Recitativo
E Adrasto ancor non viene? Oh come lento Al mio cenno risponde.
Eccolo, e seco I suoi fedeli adduce.
Scena IV
Gentil Sebia…
Sebia
Già de’tormenti miei
L’origine t’è nota, e se all’onore
Mi tradisci, o mi servi?
Szene II
Recitativo
Jojada
Mit Waffen und den Künsten in Händen
Um diesen Tempel ringsum
wacht Ihr unnachsichtig.
Wenn der heilige Ritus beginnt, diesen
Mauern sich zu nähern, soll jedem Einzelnen verwehrt sein;
mit eifriger Sorge;
Jehoiada
With weapons and implements in hand
about this temple
keep close watch.
When the sacred rite begins, to approach these walls is forbidden to
every man;
but to whom it is permitted to be there,
let him never leave with out my sign. Do you hear me?
Make all ready
for, if I am right,
I forsesee that this day will bring final success.
Scene III
Cavatina
Zibiah
Beloved shades, that linger here,
seeking bloodthirsty revenge,
to Heaven, ah!, turn back.
On the impious - that slaughtered you -
shall vengeance soon fall.
Ah! May this plaint be enough for you,
that flood my weary eyes:
Ah! May these flowers give you rest,
that [lying on this funeral urn]
a mother's pity offers you. .
Recitative
And Adrasto still comes not? O how slowly he answers my call.
Here he is, and with him he brings his faithful followers.
Scene IV
Adrasto
At your summons,
noble Zibiah …
Zibiah
Already the source of my torments
is known to you, and if in honour
I chose you to avenge me, Adrasto,
do you betray me or serve me?

Adrasto
È il dubbio, oltraggio…
Niun di me più sicuro…
Sebia
Dammi pria la tua fé.
Giuralo.
Adrasto
Il giuro.
Sebia
Di regia stirpe un infelice avanzo
Tu vedi in me, che l’usurpato trono
Ebria di sangue, e stragi
Preme l’empia Atalia.
Soffrirò dunque invendicata e sola
Di sì barbara donna il fiero oltraggio?
Adrasto
In quella estinse.
Sebia
Vedi
Quell’urna?
Adrasto
Che mai dicesti? Il figlio!
Misera madre! Il figlio qui rinchiuso?
Sebia
Quando fù da Gioram estinto al suolo
Il tuo figlio Ocozzia, tuo caro amico,
L’inumana Atalia
Gl’ stessi suoi nipoti a ferro mise,
E di Giuda sul trono ascese, allora
Oppressa dal dolor sul feral Rogo
Imposi io stessa i lacerati avanzi,
Adrasto
A trucidar quel mostro,
E a vendicarti io volo.
Adrasto
Solch ein Zweifel ist eine Beleidigung…
Keiner ist treuer als ich…
Sebia
Gib mir zuerst dein Wort.
Schwöre es.
Adrasto
Ich schwöre es.
Sebia
Den unglücklichen Rest eines königlichen Stammes
siehst du in mir, dessen usurpierten Thron
in jener auslöschte.
Sebia
Meinen Sohn.
Adrasto
Was sagst du da? Dein Sohn!
Arme Mutter! Dein Sohn ist hier eingeschlossen?
Sebia
Adrasto
Dieses Ungeheuer zu schlachten
und dich zu rächen, eile ich.
Adrasto
Such doubt is an insult ...
none is more steadfast than I am …
Zibiah
Give me first your word.
Swear it.
ⓟ & © 2012 Naxos Rights International Ltd. Page 3 of 26
Adrasto
I swear..
Zibiah
An unhappy remnant of the royal stock
you see in me, whose usurped throne,
drunk with blood and slaughter,
the impious Athaliah holds,
Shall I then, unavenged and alone, suffer
the proud offence of so cruel a woman?
Adrasto
Too true that in her lust for power
all feelings of blood and nature
are lost in her.
Zibiah
Do you see
this urn? It holds
the tenderest pledge,
that was dearest to me in the world:
my Son.
Adrasto
What do you say? Your son!
Wretched mother! Your son is enclosed here?
Zibiah
When by Joram your son Ochosia,
your dear friend, was destroyed,
the cruel Athaliah
put to the sword her own grandchildren,
and mounted the throne of Judah, then
I myself, oppressed by sorrow, on the cruel pyre laid the torn
remains
that I believed to be my son's, and in that urn
the gathered ashes
for eternal support
of my just fury, I brought with me.
It is now the sixth year, and here I direct my steps.
Adrasto
To slay this monster
and to avenge you, I hasten.

Ora non puoi
Sortir di qua, compito il Sacro Rito
Cautamente t’invola,
E vinto ogni ritegno in truce aspetto
Adrasto
T’ubbidirò…Ma poi…
Sebia
Pur tu vacilli? e qual viltà t’assale?
Adrasto
Szene I
Recitativo
Adrasto
Szene II
Second Part
Scene I
Recitative
Adrasto
Through a hostile hand at last lies dead
the proud Athaliah ...
But do you still not know what tricks
she plotted? To rule on the throne
she tried to offer as a gift
to one of her nephews, whom she pretended she had saved from
the cruel massacre
and it is believed that this child is the object of her plotting.
Zibiah
And can that be true? But Jehoiada took him as his son,
brought him up. Could Jehoiada himself,
servant of the great God be so deceived
as to put on the throne
a false king? I shudder with horror.
Adrasto
And yet
vice rules over piety.
It attacks great heroes and assails them.
Scene II
Zibiah
Enter not here!
Why so angry?
Zibiah
Aria
My poor Mother
Scene X
Recitative
Jehoiada
Zibiah, fly not from me and listen briefly,
that you may discover how wrong you are.
The tempter Mattan, it is true, came to try me.
But what? Harshly
and with bitter reproaches I spurned him.
Joash is your son. I did not tell you
only through fear that your maternal love
(Athaliah was still alive)
might betray the secret. But many times
I told you to hope and trust in Almighty God.
Joash is your son. In your delirium
nature itself spoke to your heart.
Joash is your son. He was seized
from the massacre. You will see
his breast still bears the dread signs
of a cruel wound, and the arm
on which a red mark was always seen, which he had from the first
day of his birth.
Zibiah
Ah! My blood! Ah my son! It is true, it is true.
