[12] Aria
Il mortal s’attenta invano
Penetrar l’augusto arcano,
Che nel ciel de’giorni suoi
Il destino preparò.
Ma pietoso il cielo ascolta
de’ mortali i preghi , i pianti
ed un rio destin talvolta
In prospero si cangiò. [in Giojadas Stimme ebenfalls “infelice”]
Scena IX
[13] Recitativo
Sebia
Hai risoluto?
Adrasto
Sì.
Sebia
Quell’empio?…
Adrasto
Mora,
Nel tempio per mia man.
Sebia
Né tremerai?
Adrasto
Né tremerò. Se mai
Vacillo, allor si compia
La tua minaccia; allora
Altri del colpo, e di tua destra onora.
[14] Terzetto
Gioas
Dopo sì barbare,
Sì rie vicende,….
Adrasto
Senti, ei prega.
Sebia
Co’ voti il perfido
Il Cielo offende.
Aria
Umsonst versucht der Sterbliche,
das erlauchte Geheimnis zu durchschauen,
das im Himmel das
Schicksal seiner Tage vorbereitet hat.
Aber barmherzig hört der Himmel
die Gebete, die Klagen der Sterblichen
und manchmal hat ein böses Schicksal
in ein gutes sich gewandelt.
Szene IX
Recitativo
Sebia
Hast du einen Entschluß gefasst?
Adrasto
Ja.
Sebia
Der Gottlose?…
Adrasto
Er soll sterben
im Tempel durch meine Hand.
Sebia
Und wirst du nicht zaudern?
Adrasto
Ich werde nicht zittern. Sollte ich je
wanken, dann soll deine Drohung wahr werden; dann
gib einem anderen die Ehre den Schlag zu führen und deine rechte
Hand.
Terzetto
Joas
Nach solch grausamen
und schrecklichen Ereignissen…
Adrasto
Horch, er betet.
Sebia
Mit seinen Gelübden
beleidigt der Ruchlose den Himmel.
Aria
In vain the mortal seeks
to penetrate the revered secret,
that in Heaven has made ready
the destiny of his days.
But merciful Heaven hears
the prayers of mortals, their plaints
and a bad fate often changes
to a good one .
Scene IX
Recitative
Zibiah
Have you come to a decision?
Adrasto
Yes.
Zibiah
The wicked man? ...
Adrasto
He dies,
in the Temple by my hand.
Zibiah
And will you not be afraid?
Adrasto
I will not fear. Should I ever
hesitate, then your threat
will be accomplished; then
to another give the honour of killing and your right hand.
Terzetto
Joash
After such cruel,
such terrible events ...
Adrasto
Hear, he begs you.
Zibiah
With his vows the traitor
offends Heaven..
