Adrasto
Gelo d’orror! Pur vuole,
Che lo investa l’insulti.
Insultare un amico,
un ministro di Dio?
A sol pensarvi io tremo,
Agghiaccio, sudo, inorridisco, fremo.
[6] Aria
Confusa quest’alma
Non trova piu calma;
L’eccesso l’opprime
D’un fiero dolor.
Mi vuole innocente
Onore sdegnato;
Amore spietato
Mi vuole traditor [offensor].
Scena V
[7] Recitativo accompagnato
Gioas
Dal Sacerdote, e dai Leviti intesi,
Che del tronco Reale
L’unico germe io sono. Già d’Atalia
Involato dal cielo all’ire insane
Eppur Sebia nol crede anzi pensosa
Or mi fugge, or mi cerca, or mi rampogna.
E tra gli urti d’amor, e quei dell’ira,
L’infelice tra se parla, e delira.
[8] Aria
Desolata genitrice
Nell’orror s’attrista, e affanna.
Pensier torbido l’inganna.
Qual mi desta in sen pietà.
A goder felicità.
Adrasto
schmieden!
Ich erstarre vor Schrecken! Doch will sie,
dass ich ihn anherrsche und beleidige.
Einen Freund zu beleidigen,
einen Diener Gottes?
Wenn ich nur daran denke, zittere ich,
erstarre, schwitze, erschrecke und bebe ich.
Aria
Verwirrt ist diese Seele
und findet keine Ruhe mehr;
das Übermaß drückt sie nieder
eines heftigen Schmerzes.
Unschuldig will mich sehen
die geschmähte Ehre;
die unbarmherzige Liebe
will mich als Betrüger sehen.
Szene V
Recitativo accompagnato
Joas
Adrasto
Here is the cruel stone that holds
for ever the dear objects of Zibiah's
love. With garments rent,
moist with tears, her hair unbound, I see her,
by the tomb. Ah why is she still so angry
with Jehoiada, incapable of tricks
and plots!
I freeze in horror! Yet she wants
me to attack and insult him.
Insult a friend,
a minister of God?
I tremble at the very thought,
I am chilled, I sweat, I shudder, I tremble.
Aria
Confused is this soul
and finds calm no more;
oppressed by a weight
of fierce sorrow.
Indignant honour
will have me innocent;
pitiless love
will have me a traitor..
Scene V
Accompanied Recitative
Joash
From the High Priest and Levites have I learnt that from the royal
stem
I am the only seed. Once was I hidden
by Heaven from the mad wrath of Athaliah.
Yet Zibiah, troubled, will not believe it,
flies from me, now seeks me, now insults me. And amid bouts of
love and of anger
the poor woman speaks to herself and is mad.
Aria
My poor Mother
in horror is sad and troubled.
Disturbed thoughts beguile her.
What pity this arouses in my bosom!
She is a helmsman who amid the waves,
although near to port
cannot see, filled with fear,
what his fate will be!
If she realised that I am her son
she would pass from danger
to the enjoyment of happiness.
