Audie Awards Nominations Honors.
The Audio Publishers Association (APA) has recently announced finalists for the 2000 Audie
Awards, honoring excellence in the spoken-word field. Naxos AudioBooks’ Realms of Gold,
The Letters and Poems of John Keats, read by Samuel West with Matthew Marsh, has been
selected as a finalist in the Poetry category, while Talkies award-winner and AFIM’s Indie
Award-nominee, The History of Opera, written by Richard Fawkes and read by Robert Powell
is an Original Work category finalist. Winners will be announced at APA’s annual Audie
Awards Dinner and Presentation to be held on June 2nd in Chicago, Illinois.

The young Arnold Bax was seen as the natural successor to Edward Elgar, a responsibility that he did not
welcome as it placed on him a burden of public expectation. He did enjoy considerable success with a series of
symphonic poems, The Tale the Pine Trees Knew being a fine example of this atmospheric and colourful group
of works. Yet it was his seven symphonies that were to create an international reputation for him.
The Symphony No.5, completed in 1932, was dedicated to Sibelius and inhabits the same musical world as the
great Finnish composer. The jagged rhythms, massive brass outbursts, and a sombre central movement,
create an imposing score, an unexpected mood of optimism bringing the work to a close.
Naxos repeats its success with Korngold’s Die tote Stadt by adding the only complete
recording of this important 20th century German opera to its repertory. Premiered one
year after Der Rosenkavalier, Der ferne Klang (The Distant Sound) concerns a young
composer in search of his musical identity. It is rich in mysterious motifs and beautiful
orchestral interludes. Fanfare says of this recording, "Der ferne Klang represents
Schreker at his shimmering best, this fine recording opens a long-closed door to reveal
a brilliant opera."

Benjamin Britten’s compositional output was vast, covering every form of music from operas and ballets to simple
voice settings of folksongs. He was also a highly respected conductor, solo pianist, accompanist, and an eager
participant in many chamber groups. His large catalogue of choral works spans the whole of his compositional
career, much of his music in this genre employing sacred texts that were derived from contemporary poets.
They inspired Britten to fashion some of his most radiant scores, his unique use of boys’ voices providing such
a distinctive and exciting tonal quality that it has come to characterize British church music of the twentieth century.

Born in Pennsylvania in 1910, Samuel Barber is among the most famous of American composers. Success was to prove elusive after
Barber’s auspicious debut in 1933 with the vivacious and bubbling overture, The School for Scandal. It was a meeting with Arturo
Toscanini that encouraged the great Italian conductor to premiere the Essay for Orchestra No. 1 and Adagio for Strings with his NBC
Symphony Orchestra in New York, and this provided Barber with the international recognition he required to launch a major career.
His modest catalogue of works includes three operas, two ballets, two symphonies and three concertos. Though he did experiment
with 20th century compositional techniques, his style remains firmly anchored in a romantic vein.

Living in a church tower, 193 steps above street level, was a good enough reason for the young Bohuslav Martin˚u,to spend his evenings practicing the violin.
It was later to bring him a temporary living as a member of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, though his objective in life was to become a composer.
An enormously prolific composer, he developed an intensely personal style, which often made use of Czech thematic material. The quite remarkable Tˇri jezdci,
written by the 12-year-old Martin˚u, was to herald one of the outstanding string quartet composers of the 20th century. The First Quartet was composed while
Martin˚u was strongly influenced by the music of Ravel and Debussy, and had yet to develop the unique tonal colors we find in the Second Quartet.

By the age of twenty-one Jean-Baptiste Lully had become Composer of the King’s Instrumental Music and for the next thirty years he almost completely
dominated music life at the court and in French theatre, winning in 1672 the exclusive right to produce opera. His output ranged from Church music to ballets
de cour and notable collaborations with Molière in the form of comédies-ballets such as Le bourgeois gentilhomme. In these works, written for the Chapel Royal,
Lully is inspired to paint a whole sweep of emotions, at once melancholy, sweet, tragic, noble and victorious. Observe his mastery of color. Listen to how choral
and orchestral textures, now in five, now in ten parts, change with the rhythm of the text. Note how subtle touches of orchestral color highlight the meaning of
a word or the sweetness of a modulation.

For much of the nineteenth century in Sweden, music making was confined to small-scale chamber music at home and ambitious composers had to move abroad
to seek acceptance of their work. While Berwald enjoyed some success in continental Europe, only a handful of his orchestral works were performed in Sweden during
his lifetime. This caused him in later years to concentrate on chamber music, completing two piano quintets, two string quartets, three piano trios as well
as duos for violin and piano and cello and piano. Berwald received much encouragement from his friend Liszt who praised Berwald’s invention, skill and elegant
style while adding, somewhat prophetically: ‘you truly possess originality but you will not enjoy success during your lifetime. Nevertheless you must persevere.’

Born in Ireland, educated in England and adopted by Russia, John Field became one of the most famous pianists of the early nineteenth century. The legendary delicacy

Born in Prague in 1770, Antoine Reicha ran away from home at the age of eleven and was adopted by his uncle, who taught him to play the violin, piano,
and flute. A prolific composer and highly regarded teacher, Reicha was appointed professor in composition at the Conservatoire in 1818. His catalogue of
compositions includes many operas, symphonies, concertos, large-scale choral works and a vast collection of chamber music. The wind quintets, always

Joseph Bodin de Boismortier was born in France in 1689, and became one of the first composers whose income totally depended upon his ability to provide a
constant flow of new works. He had no patrons, few of his scores were commissioned, and it seems that in his mature life he never appeared as an instrumental
musician. Yet he was so prolific, and his music so frequently performed, that he became very wealthy. Though he introduced many novel features in instrumental
combinations, he was a composer of the popular classics of the day, relying on tunefulness and elegance. His group of divertissements, the Ballets de
Village, was composed in 1734, and displays the composer’s ability to please the listener with simple charms.

At the turn of the last century salon music, a genre ranging from original compositions to arrangements of orchestral works, operas or operatic extracts, was a

household classics like Notorious, Cat People, Murder My Sweet, Mighty Joe Young, The Spiral Staircase and Bringing Up Baby. After
the departure of Max Steiner from RKO in 1935, Webb became the musical voice at the studio for nearly 20 years. Occasionally, RKO
would go outside their talent pool and hire such high profile composers as Alfred Newman, Bernard Herrmann, or Max Steiner for
special projects, but it was Roy Webb, more than any other composer, who set the musical style for the studio during this era.

This CD presents works by three leading exponents of the Flemish Romantic School, from Peter Benoit, often regarded as the founding father of the
movement, to Lodewijk de Vocht, who, as a conductor, introduced many 20th century works to Belgian audiences. Benoit’s aim was to create music in a
specifically Flemish style, based on language and folk-song, and he did much to raise the standard of music-making in Belgium, establishing the Royal
Flemish Conservatory in Antwerp. Benoit’s favourite student, Lodewijk Mortelmans contributed greatly to musical life in Antwerp by co-founding the
series Nieuwe Concerten (New Concerts), in which many of the works of Benoit, de Vocht and Mortelmans received their first performances.

Niels W. Gade, known as "Father of Danish Music," developed an early passion for the violin. After intensive private lessons he made his first public appearance at the age of sixteen and soon embarked on a compositional career, writing
successful symphonies as well as many pieces for the violin. His three Violin Sonatas illustrate his development as a composer from his early first Sonata op. 6 dedicated to Clara Schumann to his second, most successful Sonata op.
21 bearing his personal romantic signature. It was not for another thirty-six years that he wrote his late third Sonata op. 59, a work of a brooding melancholy sometimes reminiscent of Brahms.
