Stölzel composed a series of ten cantatas for the feast days from Christmas to Epiphany, a sort of fictive Christmas Oratorio analogous to Bach’s famous cantata collection. Stölzel’s cantatas, however, do
not merely concern the Christmas story, but comment and reflect on it in magnificently crafted compilations of biblical passages, free madrigal poetry and chorales. As in his Brockes Passion, it becomes

This CD premiere of Felix Draeseke’s principal symphonic work, the Symphonia tragica marks an important milestone in music history. Draeseke’s third symphony celebrated its sensational concert premiere in Dresden in
1888 and a whole century of discographic documentation had to go by before one of the once most successful and certainly most powerful accomplishments of the German symphonic literature could be made available to
the world. During the 1920s the Symphonia tragica was still regarded by many as one of the most important symphonies of all time, and prominent conductors enlisted themselves in its cause. It is astonishing indeed how
Draeseke was able to forge to his own unique stylistic path between the giants Brahms and Bruckner.

During his own fascinating lifetime Bohemian composer Jan Ladislav Dussek was regarded as a piano and glass-harmonica virtuoso. In Paris and London, he maintained close ties to the aristocracy and was very

Niels W. Gade, known as "Father of Danish Music," developed an early passion for the violin. After intensive private lessons he made his first public appearance at the age of sixteen and soon embarked on a compositional career, writing
successful symphonies as well as many pieces for the violin. His three Violin Sonatas illustrate his development as a composer from his early first Sonata op. 6 dedicated to Clara Schumann to his second, most successful Sonata op.
21 bearing his personal romantic signature. It was not for another thirty-six years that he wrote his late third Sonata op. 59, a work of a brooding melancholy sometimes reminiscent of Brahms.

The origins of The former Grauhof Augustinian Monastery can be traced back to the Middle Ages. The monastery church built in 1711 was one of the most important baroque architectural complexes in Lower Saxony,
and the construction of a magnificent organ by the organ builder Christoph Treutmann during 1734-37 brought the church to its artistic completion. The gravity of this organ’s sound character, its rich color palette of
foundation stops, and its numerous reed stops combine to produce an overall sound that seems to be virtually ideal for the interpretation of Bach’s organ music.
