Christmas Oratorio, Cantatas 1-5
FULL PRICE RELEASE
Cantatas for the First Day of Christmas – Cantatas for the Second Day of Christmas – Cantata for the Third Day of Christmas
Britta Schwarz, Canto (Mezzo-Soprano) / Henning Voss, Alto / Jan Kobow, Tenor / Klaus Mertens, Bass / Weimarer Barockensemble / Ludger Rémy
Playing Time: 57:54
"It’s a wonderful CD: The music’s quality can easily be compared with Bach’s. But Stölzel has his own voice,
which speaks to us across the centuries through Rémy and his superb ensemble, imploring us to listen." –Joel Flegler, Fanfare
Stölzel composed a series of ten cantatas for the feast days from Christmas to Epiphany, a sort of fictive Christmas Oratorio analogous to Bach’s famous cantata collection. Stölzel’s cantatas, however, do
not merely concern the Christmas story, but comment and reflect on it in magnificently crafted compilations of biblical passages, free madrigal poetry and chorales. As in his Brockes Passion, it becomes
abundantly clear that Stölzel was indeed an independent-minded and highly original composer. Our recording features the premiere of Cantatas Nos. 1-5 for the First to Third Days of Christmas. A true
Christmas celebration for all oratorio fans, treasure hunters, and pleasure seekers.
Felix Draeseke (1835-1913)
Symphony No.3, op.40 in C (Symphonia tragica) – Funeral March, op.79 in E minor
7 61203 95812 2
Radio-Philharmonie Hannover des NDR / Jörg-Peter Weigle • Playing Time: 54:58
This CD premiere of Felix Draeseke’s principal symphonic work, the Symphonia tragica marks an important milestone in music history. Draeseke’s third symphony celebrated its sensational concert premiere in Dresden in
1888 and a whole century of discographic documentation had to go by before one of the once most successful and certainly most powerful accomplishments of the German symphonic literature could be made available to
the world. During the 1920s the Symphonia tragica was still regarded by many as one of the most important symphonies of all time, and prominent conductors enlisted themselves in its cause. It is astonishing indeed how
Draeseke was able to forge to his own unique stylistic path between the giants Brahms and Bruckner.
During his own fascinating lifetime Bohemian composer Jan Ladislav Dussek was regarded as a piano and glass-harmonica virtuoso. In Paris and London, he maintained close ties to the aristocracy and was very
successful and popular as a pianist, piano teacher, and composer. Dussek was interested in the further development of the pianos of his time and was responsible for the extension of the keyboard to a full 6 octaves.
These Piano Trios and three Sonatas, all from his London period, captivate with their catchy lightness and elegance, employing Scottish and Irish melodies. This performance on authentic instruments is an invitation to dance!
Sigfrid Karg-Elert certainly numbers among the most original musical personalities of the first half of the twentieth century. He defies stylistic classification. His choice of the much-maligned harmonium as his principal
instrument already marks him as a nonconformist. Karg-Elert’s 33 Portraits, op. 101 for harmonium form a one-of-a-kind musical gallery taking us through the centuries. This unique anthology of stylistic copies is no
laughing matter but a serious work that has nothing at all in common with run-of-the-mill "Variations on...in the Style of...." You will smile with delight at chameleon Sigfrid’s stupendous change-artistry.
Niels W. Gade, known as "Father of Danish Music," developed an early passion for the violin. After intensive private lessons he made his first public appearance at the age of sixteen and soon embarked on a compositional career, writing
successful symphonies as well as many pieces for the violin. His three Violin Sonatas illustrate his development as a composer from his early first Sonata op. 6 dedicated to Clara Schumann to his second, most successful Sonata op.
21 bearing his personal romantic signature. It was not for another thirty-six years that he wrote his late third Sonata op. 59, a work of a brooding melancholy sometimes reminiscent of Brahms.
Gerhard Weinberger, Organ • Playing Time: 77:26
The origins of The former Grauhof Augustinian Monastery can be traced back to the Middle Ages. The monastery church built in 1711 was one of the most important baroque architectural complexes in Lower Saxony,
and the construction of a magnificent organ by the organ builder Christoph Treutmann during 1734-37 brought the church to its artistic completion. The gravity of this organ’s sound character, its rich color palette of
foundation stops, and its numerous reed stops combine to produce an overall sound that seems to be virtually ideal for the interpretation of Bach’s organ music.
Ture Rangström (1884-1947)
Complete Symphonies
CD 1: Symphony No.1 – Dityramb & Várhymn • CD 2: Symphony No.2 – Intermezzo dramatica • CD 3: Symphony No.3 – Symphony No.4
Norrköping Symphony Orchestra / Michail Jurowski • Playing Time: 170:34
Sweden’s Ture Rangstroem was a natural talent, an elemental tonal force, and so is his mighty, hymnic, and original music. He had a fine sense for new ideas and created al fresco paintings in a block technique in
which elegiac tones are sometimes colored by loud orchestral effects. This music is overwhelming in the truest sense of the word.
