All’eccidio inumano, e quel fanciul si crede,
Che dell’insidie sue fosse l’oggetto.
Sebia
E fia mai ver? Ma Giojada qual figlio
Lo tenne, l’educò. Potea colei
Gelo d’orrore.
Zweiter Teil
Szene I
Recitativo
Adrasto
Szene II
Sebia
Dringe hier nicht ein!
Joas
Warum so unwillig?
Sebia
Und wie
wagst du, dich mir zu nahen?
Joas
Aber welche Sünde habe ich begangen!
Ah! Mutter, weißt du noch nicht,
dass ich dein Joas, dein Sohn bin?
Sebia
Second Part
Scene I
Recitative
Adrasto
Through a hostile hand at last lies dead
the proud Athaliah ...
But do you still not know what tricks
she plotted? To rule on the throne
she tried to offer as a gift
to one of her nephews, whom she pretended she had saved from
the cruel massacre
and it is believed that this child is the object of her plotting.
Zibiah
And can that be true? But Jehoiada took him as his son,
brought him up. Could Jehoiada himself,
servant of the great God be so deceived
as to put on the throne
a false king? I shudder with horror.
Adrasto
And yet
vice rules over piety.
It attacks great heroes and assails them.
Scene II
Zibiah
Enter not here!
Joash
Why so angry?
Zibiah
And how
do you dare come near me?
Joash
But what have I done wrong.!
Ah, Mother, do you not still know
that I am your Joash, your son?
Zibiah
Away from me, for you are an impostor.
