Adrasto
È il dubbio, oltraggio…
Niun di me più sicuro…
Sebia
Dammi pria la tua fé.
Giuralo.
Adrasto
Il giuro.
Sebia
Di regia stirpe un infelice avanzo
Tu vedi in me, che l’usurpato trono
Ebria di sangue, e stragi
Preme l’empia Atalia.
Soffrirò dunque invendicata e sola
Di sì barbara donna il fiero oltraggio?
Adrasto
In quella estinse.
Sebia
Vedi
Quell’urna?
Adrasto
Che mai dicesti? Il figlio!
Misera madre! Il figlio qui rinchiuso?
Sebia
Quando fù da Gioram estinto al suolo
Il tuo figlio Ocozzia, tuo caro amico,
L’inumana Atalia
Gl’ stessi suoi nipoti a ferro mise,
E di Giuda sul trono ascese, allora
Oppressa dal dolor sul feral Rogo
Imposi io stessa i lacerati avanzi,
Adrasto
A trucidar quel mostro,
E a vendicarti io volo.
Adrasto
Solch ein Zweifel ist eine Beleidigung…
Keiner ist treuer als ich…
Sebia
Gib mir zuerst dein Wort.
Schwöre es.
Adrasto
Ich schwöre es.
Sebia
Den unglücklichen Rest eines königlichen Stammes
siehst du in mir, dessen usurpierten Thron
in jener auslöschte.
Sebia
Meinen Sohn.
Adrasto
Was sagst du da? Dein Sohn!
Arme Mutter! Dein Sohn ist hier eingeschlossen?
Sebia
Adrasto
Dieses Ungeheuer zu schlachten
und dich zu rächen, eile ich.
Adrasto
Such doubt is an insult ...
none is more steadfast than I am …
Zibiah
Give me first your word.
Swear it.
Adrasto
I swear..
Zibiah
An unhappy remnant of the royal stock
you see in me, whose usurped throne,
drunk with blood and slaughter,
the impious Athaliah holds,
Shall I then, unavenged and alone, suffer
the proud offence of so cruel a woman?
Adrasto
Too true that in her lust for power
all feelings of blood and nature
are lost in her.
Zibiah
Do you see
this urn? It holds
the tenderest pledge,
that was dearest to me in the world:
my Son.
Adrasto
What do you say? Your son!
Wretched mother! Your son is enclosed here?
Zibiah
When by Joram your son Ochosia,
your dear friend, was destroyed,
the cruel Athaliah
put to the sword her own grandchildren,
and mounted the throne of Judah, then
I myself, oppressed by sorrow, on the cruel pyre laid the torn
remains
that I believed to be my son's, and in that urn
the gathered ashes
for eternal support
of my just fury, I brought with me.
It is now the sixth year, and here I direct my steps.
Adrasto
To slay this monster
and to avenge you, I hasten.
