The School of Visual arts has
long prided itself on the reputation
and experience of its faculty.
Today, there is a faculty of more than 1,000 artists, writers,
designers, filmmakers and photographers representing
many fields of the fine and applied arts, computer technology,
and the humanities and sciences, who come to class
straight from their studios and workplaces, bringing an
array of experience to the College.
These are dedicated professionals who believe in nurturing
the talent of the future and sharing their experience of and
insight into the arduous and exhilarating process of
becoming an artist. They teach at SVA because they want
to; and to keep this relationship in balance, SVA never asks
its faculty to accept more teaching time than their professional
work permits.
At SVA we are justly proud of a faculty that has made a
substantial impact on our culture, a faculty that students
elsewhere read about in professional art publications and
literary journals. We are prouder still of our faculty’s
commitment to teaching and to our students. Underscoring
this commitment is their implicit agreement to teach only
as long as they enjoy teaching and continue to do it well.
The faculty of SVA inspires and challenges our students to
create work of power, integrity and imagination.
