GRAPHPACK ® 2M connection technology 

Part No. 

For the rapid and economical connection of capillary columns to 

GC Inlets and Detectors. 

The components of the GRAPHPACK 2M connection technology 

are the GRAPHPACK 2M ferrule, the GRAPHPACK 2M adapter 

and the GRAPHPACK nut. 

GRAPHPACK 2M ferrule 

The GRAPHPACK 2M ferrule is a 

cylindrical metal cartridge packed with 

graphite. 

Advantages 

● Rapid and reliable installation/ 

changing of capillary columns. 

● Rapid mounting and positioning of 

the ferrules on the capillary column 

outside the oven. 

● Leak-free connections are achieved 

without excessive tightening. 

● Connections remain leak-free with 

temperature cycling. 

● Self-centering of the ferrule on the 

GRAPHPACK 2M adapter. 

● The capillary column is always 

centered in the inlet or detector. 

● No damage to column coating. 

● Economical, no more than two 

ferrules are required for the life of 

a column.

This dual column inlet adapter permits the simultaneous connection 

of two fused silica capillary columns to one inlet. This allows 

a sample to be analyzed on two columns simultaneously from a 

single injection. Adapters are available for GERSTEL ® inlets as well 

as for all major GC manufactures. 

Advantages 

● Reduction in analysis time. 

● Simultaneous analysis using capillary columns with different

The components of the GRAPHPACK 3D/2 

connection technology are the GRAPHPACK 

3D/2 ferrule, the GRAPHPACK 3D/2 connector 

and the GRAPHPACK 3D/2 screw. 

Sulfinert ® 

Part No. 

All GRAPHPACK 3D/2 components which come into contact with analytes are 

Sulfinert ® coated. This offers the optimal surface material for every GC analysis. 

Sulfinert is the latest in passivation coating technology, the next generation of the 

well-known Silcosteel® coating. 

The Sulfinert coating is ideal for use in all GC applications such as environmental, 

flavour and fragrance, off-odors, food and beverage, chemical and petrochemical, 

pharmaceutical and polymers. Sulfinert is stable over a wide pH range and unlike fused 

silica coatings, which can dissolve in caustic environments; the Sulfinert coating is 

stable when sampling caustic amines as well as acidic sulfur compounds. 

Sulfinert provides for the determination of ultra-low levels of organic compounds and 

superior inertness for sulfur compounds, simplifying the choice of passivation surface. 

When working with GERSTEL ® GRAPHPACK 3D/2 products, there is no need to use 

different passivation surfaces for different applications or different analytes.

GERSTEL ® Cooled Injection System, CIS 

Part No. 

Universal inlet for gas chromatography 

The GERSTEL CIS is a temperature 

programmable GC inlet. The CIS offers 

septumless, cold injection of volumes 

of up to 1000 µl for liquid samples. The 

integrated split function enables the CIS to 

handle ultra-trace concentrations as well 

as undiluted samples. Programmed linear 

heating ensures quantitative, discrimination-free

The CIS is a general purpose, universal 

GC inlet. When working with Thermal 

Desorption or Headspace techniques, 

the CIS is used for enrichment, focusing 

and quantitative transfer of analytes to the 

capillary column. 

An integral part of the CIS is the 

GERSTEL MAS controller, which can be 

used to control all GERSTEL modules, 

thus ensuring easy, cost effective system 

upgrades. The CIS can be retrofitted to 

existing Agilent Technologies/HP gas 

chromatographs. 

GERSTEL GRAPHPACK ® technology and 

septumless sampling head are standard 

features. A choice of liquid CO2, liquid N2 

or Peltier cooling is available. Available 

CIS models cover the temperature range 

from –150 to +600 °C. Compounds 

covering a wide boiling range can be 

efficiently trapped with subsequent 

discrimation-free analyte transfer to the 

capillary column. The CIS is compatible 

with all GERSTEL autosamplers - and 

with autosamplers from all major manufacturers.

The GERSTEL MultiPurpose Sampler, 

MPS 2 is a highly flexible and productive 

autosampler and sample preparation robot 

for GC and GC/MS analysis. The MPS 2 

can automate everything from sample 

preparation to sample introduction. The 

MPS 2 is easily adapted to both new 

and existing instruments. The system is 

installed on top of the GC, saving valuable 

bench space, and is compatible with all 

standard laboratory GC systems. 

GERSTEL MASter Software enables 

integrated control of the MPS 2 and a 

GC or GC-MS system from one method 

and one integrated sequence list through 

the Agilent ® Technologies ChemStation 

Software. 

The GERSTEL MPS PrepStation is a 

dual-rail/dual robot configuration of the 

MPS 2 MultiPurpose Sampler. 

The PrepStation performs fully 

automated sample preparation and 

sample introduction. One MPS rail of 

the MPS PrepStation is an automated 

liquid sample handler that performs 

a wide range of sample preparation 

functions. The second MPS rail enables 

many automated sample introduction 

options, including Headspace and SPME 

depending upon the selected MPS 2 

hardware configuration. 

The GERSTEL PrepBuilder Software 

enables overlapping sample preparation

GERSTEL Twister ® 

The GERSTEL ® Twister ® looks just like a conventional 

magnetic stir bar, except for the polydimethylsiloxane 

(PDMS) coating. While stirring the aqueous or polar 

liquid sample, the Twister efficiently extracts organic 

compounds into the PDMS phase. After stirring, the 

Twister is transferred to a GERSTEL Thermal Desorption 

System. Thermal desorption ensures efficient and 

quantitative transfer of analytes to the GC column and 

lowest detection limits. Thermally labile analytes can 

be desorbed using a liquid solvent for subsequent LC 

determination – or for Large Volume Injection GC. Due 

to the large volume of PDMS on the Twister and due to 

the stirring effiency, it provides much greater capacity

The GERSTEL ® Thermal Desorption System, 

TDS 3 is a highly optimized system for 

thermal desorption of Volatile Organic 

Compounds (VOCs) and Semi-Volatile 

Organic Compounds (SVOCs) followed by 

cryofocusing and GC analysis. 

Thermal desorption is a powerful concentration 

technique providing extremely 

low limits of detection. VOCs and SVOCs 

from gas-phase samples are trapped and 

concentrated on an adsorbent bed in a TDS 

tube by pumping a volume of the gas-phase 

sample through the tube. Solid and liquid 

samples can be placed in the TDS tube 

for direct thermal extraction or dynamic 

headspace of VOCs and SVOCs. 

In the TDS 3, analytes are thermally 

desorbed from the TDS tube using 

heat and a controlled flow of inert gas. 

Following primary desorption, analytes are 

concentrated on a second and smaller trap 

prior to GC or GC/MS determination. 

The GERSTEL Cooled Injection System, 

CIS functions as a cryotrap for the TDS 3, 

focusing and concentrating the compounds 

to be determined, and then transferring 

them to the capillary column in a narrow 

band for optimal GC separation using rapid, 

programmed heating. 

With the addition of the TDS A the TDS 3 

becomes a fully automated thermal 

desorption system capable of unattended, 

automated analysis of up to 20 samples. A 

separate TDS system, the TDS G on-line, is 

designed for continuous on-line analysis of 

VOCs and SVOCs in air and gas streams.

Carbotrap/Carbopack Unlike activated charcoals, which 

are porous, graphitized carbon blacks (GCBs), such as 

Carbotrap and Carbopack, are generally non-porous. 

Consequently, the entire surface of these materials is 

available for interactions that depend solely on dispersion 

(London) forces. These adsorbents offer excellent thermal 

stability, which ensures minimal bleed at thermal desorption 

temperatures, and their coarse 20/40 and 40/60 mesh particle 

size prevents high pressure drop across the tube. Hydrophobic 

properties minimize sample displacement by water, enabling 

you to obtain accurate samples despite high humidity. Trapped 

compounds can be desorbed by solvent or thermal desorption 

at virtually 100% desorption efficiency. 

Carbopack B is essentially the same adsorbent as Carbotrap; 

the only difference is the mesh size (60/80 mesh for Carbopack B 

vs. 20/40 mesh for Carbotrap). Both have a specific surface area 

of 100 m 2 /g. Carbopack B is often used in narrow bore tubes (1-2 

mm ID), for sample refocusing or for very low flow sampling (e.g.,

Thermal Extractor, TE 1/2 

The GERSTEL Thermal Extractor TE 2 enables the analyst 

to extract volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds 

from liquid or solid samples, trapping the compounds on 

a TDS tube for further analysis. For aldehyde analysis, 

analytes can be trapped on a DNPH tube for subsequent 

liquid elution and LC analysis. The GERSTEL TE 2 has a 

larger inner diameter than normal TDS tubes. Larger sample 

volumes can be analyzed to obtain lower detection limits. 

A larger, more representative sample volume also ensures 

better results when analyzing inhomogenous samples. 

The GERSTEL TE 2 is completely independent of the TDS 

system, eliminating the risk of system contamination when 

analyzing unknown samples.

GERSTEL ® Preparative Fraction Collector, PFC

The GERSTEL PFC is used for purification and 

collection of compounds or compound classes 

following separation by capillary gas chromatography. 

Compounds are automatically and selectively collected 

in up to six different traps that can be heated or cooled 

depending on the needs for the type of compounds. 

Highly accurate switching between the traps enable the 

analyst to collect and accumulate compounds with high 

purity and high yield from up to 150 GC runs. A seventh 

trap is available to collect all compounds not collected 

in the main traps. These compounds can be saved for 

further analysis or for conducting “subtraction studies” of 

key compounds.

Olfactory Detector Port, ODP 2 

The GERSTEL ODP allows olfactory detection of compounds by 

the human nose. Olfactory detection is performed in parallel to 

GC detection with FID, FPD or MSD detectors as compounds 

elute from the GC column. The effluent is split as it leaves the 

column, arriving simultaneously at the nose and at the detector, 

enabling the analyst to gain additional information on odor-active 

compounds. Using a headset with a microphone coupled 

to voice recognition software, the analyst can insert spoken 

comments directly into the chromatogram for peak annotation 

and into the analysis report.
