Chappy reports on Kids & Cars
Dear readers,
I'm writing today to extend further information that has
been brought to my attention after the passage of the Kids and
Cars Safety Act in 2008.
After the legislation was signed into law late in February
of 2008, it changed the way data was gathered, as quite
often vehicle backover incidents and deaths were occurring
on private property, which were never keep track of, till the
passage of the Safety Act. The Safety Act gave the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration (which keeps track of
the data) one year to compute data and write a report on the
findings. The Safety Administration reported those findings
two days following my daughter Madison's 5th birthday, who
was killed in a backover accident in 2005.
The magnitude of the data was quite staggering.
Previously, it was believed that 1,000 children were backed
Pork Roast D~nner
over by vehicles every year, with over 50 children dying from
their injures. The published report painted a different picture. In
the past year, over 292 people were backed over and killed, 104
of those being children under the age of 5. Not to mention that
fact that over 18,000 people were in back over incidents (3,500
were children under the age of 5) and out of that 18,000, 3,000
-a
were considered incapacitating. Most shocking, it was not just ~ ~ county l Transit l ~
children that were backed over and killed, but teenagers (68
deaths) to senior citizens (76 deaths). a ijD0,
228-TRIP (8747)
The passage of the legislation helped bring those numbers
to the surface. It did not mandate that all cars be equipped with
certain safety equipment (example, reverse camera). It only Next to Scheduled Williston is
rip
mandated researching the magnitude of the problem, because
obviously you cannot completely solve the problem, but you
can begin to save lives with studying the problem and making
simple changes to car designs and safety devices. Which, I have
noticed the car manufacturers have taken notice and quite often
now compared to three years ago, they are offering backover
safety equipment on their vehicles, which was not previously
offered and not grouping it with navigation systems. So the
average consumer can make an honest decision in equipping
their vehicle to be safer.
I also wanted to thank everyone that supported me on my
many trips to Washington D.C. over that 2 year period and there.
numerous letters to congressman and cards of encouragement.
It did not go unnoticed or unappreciated.
Thank you,
President Obarna's sure-fire solution: Cut the military
budget.
On Tuesday, 487 donkeys were deployed to Iraq and
numerous more are on the way as the HUMVEE is being
phased out of overseas operations in an inceptive effort to
curb military spending. Donkeys were the elected mode of
new transportation as they wou!d be less likely to be conf'used
with Iraq's formidable fleet of camels. In addition, donkeys
get around 87 m.p.b. (miles per bale) as conlpared to an
estimated 59 m.p.b. for the camel. Also, the troops are less
apt to get spit at by a donkey.
While this breaking news of donkey deployn~ent has
deeply disturbzd donkey basketball fans across the nation, the
He could have won the Grand-Slam at tennis. He could golf
Passenger: "Sounds like he was something really
Passenger: "Wow, some guy then."
Cabbie: "He always knew the quickest way to go in
